How to Buy an Air Conditioner with Installation: Room Size, Tonnage, Inverter
Buy the air conditioner together with installation
The price of the unit is only part of the cost. There is also installation: the pipe run between the units, brackets, pipes, drainage, wiring. If you compare only the prices of air conditioners, it is easy to get a “cheap” offer where installation costs extra and the total ends up higher. So say right away that you need it fitted, and compare “turnkey” offers.
Type, capacity and room size
The wall-mounted split is the most common choice. A multi-split suits cooling several rooms from one outdoor unit. Portable and window models are simpler to install, but louder and less efficient. Capacity is chosen by room size. As a rough guide, a small bedroom needs about a 1 ton (12,000 BTU) model and a bigger room 1.5 ton. But ceiling height, glass and a sun-facing wall can change the calculation, so ask the installer.
Inverter and heating
Inverter models vary their power smoothly, are quieter and use less electricity than ordinary on/off ones. If you plan to use the air conditioner for heating (useful in colder regions), check down to what outdoor temperature it works: it differs from model to model, and some heat reliably only in mild cold. If your power supply is unstable, ask about protection against voltage swings.
What to put in your request
- air conditioner type: wall-mounted split, multi-split, portable, cassette;
- room size: in sq ft or m²;
- installation: needed or not; length of the pipe run, floor, wall material, whether piping is already laid;
- city and area: for delivery and installation;
- capacity: 1 ton, 1.5 ton, 2 ton or BTU;
- features: inverter, heating, Wi-Fi, energy rating, quiet indoor unit;
- number, brand, new or used, budget.
Example: “I need an inverter wall-mounted air conditioner for a 25 m² bedroom in Sydney, 1.5 ton, with a top energy rating. Installation needed with a pipe run up to 5 m, new, budget up to $770 including installation.”
How to compare offers
Check what installation includes: pipe length, brackets, drain pump, wall chasing, the visit. Ask about the warranty separately for the unit and for installation. Ask whether they commission it and show you how to use it. The season matters too: before summer installation teams are busy, and offers in the off-season can be better.
