How to buy a bus: offers from sellers and operators

First decide what you need the bus for

You cannot just buy a bus “in general”: city routes, tours, staff transport and school runs need different vehicles. A minibus built on a Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit is more manoeuvrable and cheaper to run, but seats fewer people. A long-distance tourist coach is more comfortable on the road, but burns more fuel and needs an experienced driver. So first count how many seats you really need, what distances you cover and what kind of passengers you carry.

How to buy a bus through BlaBlaPrice

Instead of looking through dozens of listings and calling owners, you write one request in your own words: type, number of seats, year, condition, city, budget. You can add one photo. Before it is shown, the request is checked and you are told what sellers still need to know. Then dealers, operators and private owners reply: what they offer, the price or what it depends on, photos, and the terms of inspection. Sellers see where their offer ranks, so they often improve their terms. Your phone number is hidden, and only the seller you choose gets your contacts. More on the “How it works” page.

What to put in your request

  • Type of bus — minibus, city, long-distance, school or passenger-cargo.
  • Model — for example Mercedes Sprinter 316, Isuzu, Setra.
  • Number of seats — with or without the driver.
  • Year — exact or “not older than 2012”.
  • Kilometres driven — the maximum, if you have a limit.
  • Engine — fuel, capacity, emission standard.
  • Technical condition — running, repaired or for restoration.
  • Papers — registration, and whether it suits commercial passenger transport.
  • City and budget, if you want to state them.

Example: “I am looking for a Mercedes Sprinter or Volkswagen Crafter minibus, 19+1 seats, not older than 2012, up to 450,000 km, diesel, with valid registration. For passenger transport, so the chassis must be sound and the seats undamaged. Brisbane, I can come for an inspection. Budget up to $31,000.”

What to check before buying

Passenger vehicles work long and hard, so the odometer does not show the real load. Ask for the service history and photos of the engine, suspension, body with sills and underside, and the interior and seats. Check the papers separately: whether the registration is valid, whether the bus was converted from a goods vehicle without permission, and whether it has passed its fitness check. For commercial passenger transport, compare the number of seats in the registration papers with the listing.

When you compare offers, look not only at the price but also at the costs ahead: the state of the tyres, clutch, gearbox and air conditioning. A bus that is “cheap but needs repair” can easily end up dearer than a sound one. Ask whether the seller lets you take a test drive and have the vehicle checked at a garage.

Common mistakes

Going only by the number of seats in the listing and not checking it against the papers. Not comparing engines by emission standard, although running costs and restrictions depend on it. Buying without inspecting the underside and sills, where rust shows most. Forgetting the season: before the tourist season demand rises and the choice is narrower.

If a passenger bus does not suit you, look at related options: light trucks and vans up to 3.5 t or trucks.

Questions and answers

Which bus is best for a small business?

For staff transport on short routes a 15–20 seat minibus is usually enough. For long-distance trips, consider a coach with soft seats and a luggage hold.

How do I check that a bus is fit for passenger transport?

Compare the number of seats with the registration papers, check the repair history, the papers and any permits you need. Also ask to have it inspected at a garage.

Can I buy a bus that needs repair?

Yes, just say so in the request. Sellers will write what needs to be restored and you can compare the total cost.

Do all sellers see my phone number?

No, contacts are hidden. You share them only with the seller you choose.
