Dog gear: how to choose it and buy at a fair price

Size matters more than brand

A harness or collar that does not fit will either chafe or let your dog slip out. So the main thing is to measure your dog, not to rely on the breed name. For a collar you need the neck girth; for a harness, the chest girth behind the front legs and, depending on the model, the length of the back. Two fingers should fit between the fabric and the body.

A puppy grows fast, so people often buy an adjustable model with room to grow or plan to replace it in a few months.

What to choose for the job

  • A collar suits a calm dog and is where you hang an ID tag. For narrow-headed breeds (sighthounds, greyhounds) wide, soft models are comfortable.
  • A harness is better for small breeds and dogs that pull on the lead. There are “anti-pull” models with a clip on the chest.
  • A retractable lead is handy for walks in open spaces, but in a busy city with traffic an ordinary lead is better.
  • A muzzle is useful for vet visits, travel and some public places. A basket muzzle lets the dog breathe and drink, while a fabric one is only for short periods.
  • Reflective strips and a light-up tag are useful in the evenings, and in the rainy season.

Material and price

Nylon is light and cheap and dries quickly, but can mat the coat of long-haired breeds. Natural leather lasts long and is soft once broken in, but costs more and does not like constant damp. Biothane (a rubber-like coating) does not absorb water and cleans easily, so owners of water-loving breeds like it. A metal chain is used less, mostly for large and strong dogs. The cost depends on the material, the fittings (buckles, clips), engraving and the brand.

What to put in your request

  • what exactly — collar, harness, lead, retractable lead, muzzle, ID tag, clothes;
  • the dog's size — breed, weight, neck or chest girth;
  • features — reflective, anti-pull, with engraving, with a pocket for a tracker;
  • material and colour;
  • brand, if you have a favourite, for example Julius-K9;
  • budget and delivery city.

Example: “I am looking for a Julius-K9 harness for a Labrador, 30 kg, chest girth 78 cm, black, with the dog's name and my phone number engraved. Sydney, courier delivery. Budget up to $43.”

How to compare offers

Look at the size chart and at whether you can exchange the item if it does not fit. For engraving, ask how long it takes to make. Compare identical models: an original Julius-K9 and a look-alike harness with no brand differ in price and in how strong the fittings are.

How BlaBlaPrice works here

You write your request once on BlaBlaPrice, and pet shops and craftspeople reply in the chat with prices, sizes and delivery. The platform shows the best-fitting offer first. Your contacts stay hidden until you choose a seller. Read more in how it works.

Look for food, bowls and toys in pet supplies, and for the dog itself in the “Dogs” section.

Questions and answers

Harness or collar: which is better for daily walks?

For small dogs and those that pull, a harness is usually more comfortable, because it does not press on the neck. A collar suits calm dogs and is where you hang an ID tag.

How do I measure my dog for a harness?

Measure the chest girth behind the front legs and, if needed, the length of the back. Two fingers should fit between the harness and the body.

Can I exchange dog gear if it does not fit?

It depends on the seller. Ask about exchange and return terms before you order, especially if you are getting custom engraving.
