Gearbox repair: manual, automatic, DSG, CVT
The type of gearbox decides everything
A manual gearbox, a classic automatic with a torque converter, a DSG-type dual-clutch and a CVT are repaired in completely different ways, and this affects the price, the timing and how many mechanics take them on. On a manual, the most common jobs are the clutch, bearings and synchronisers. In an automatic or a dual-clutch, problems usually involve the oil, the mechatronic unit or the valve body. A CVT is very demanding about oil, and its belt or chain and cones wear out over time.
If you know the gearbox code, for example DSG 7 or AW55, write it straight away: it will cut down the number of follow-up questions.
What to put in your request
- type of gearbox — manual, automatic, DSG or dual-clutch, CVT, and the code if you know it;
- what to do — overhaul, clutch replacement, mechatronic repair, oil change, adaptation;
- make, model, year and engine — for example Honda City CVT, 2016;
- symptoms — jerks when shifting, slipping, noise, a gear will not engage;
- spare parts — yours or the mechanic's, original or aftermarket, for example a LuK clutch kit;
- towing — whether the car can get there under its own power or needs a flatbed;
- warranty, city, timing and budget.
Example: “Skoda Octavia 1.4 TSI, DSG 7 (dry) gearbox, it jerks when pulling away and slips. I need a diagnosis and a clutch replacement, parts from the mechanic. Melbourne, within a week, 6-month warranty, budget up to $600.”
How to compare offers
First check that the mechanic works with your exact gearbox. A general mechanic may not have the software to adapt a DSG or a test bench to check the mechatronic unit. In the offer, look at what is included: stripping down, inspection, a set of gaskets and seals, oil, adaptation after assembly, a test drive.
On BlaBlaPrice you describe the symptoms and the car once, and mechanics reply in the chat with a price or what it depends on, timing and warranty. The site shows the best offer by substance first, with reviews next to it. Mechanics see their place among the others, so they compete on terms, and your number stays hidden until you choose a provider.
What affects the price
- the type and complexity of the gearbox: a dual-clutch and a CVT usually cost more than a manual;
- the degree of damage: a simple clutch change or stripping down with replacing gears;
- spare parts: original, good aftermarket, reconditioned units;
- the need for towing and urgency.
Common mistakes
Most often people ignore the first signs, such as jerks or a hum, and drive until the gearbox fails completely. They do not change the oil in an automatic, thinking it is “lifetime”. They change the clutch without checking the flywheel, which sometimes has to be replaced along with it. They do not ask for a diagnosis before the repair, although the cause is sometimes electronics or sensors, not mechanics.
To rule out sensor problems, do car computer diagnostics. For oil care there is servicing and oil change. All services are in the section “Car & motorcycle servicing”.
