Jobs in IT: how to find a developer, tester or system administrator
There is no single “IT person”
The most common employer mistake is to look for “an IT guy” in general. A developer, a tester, a system administrator and a repair technician are different professions with different requirements and pay. So first decide which task you need solved: develop a product, check quality, set up servers and a network, or fix equipment in the office.
On BlaBlaPrice you describe the vacancy once and candidates reply on their own. For the employer it is free.
Who to look for in this section
- Programmer — state the language and stack (for example Python, JavaScript, Java), whether it is development from scratch or support, junior, mid or senior level.
- Tester (QA) — manual or automated testing, tools, type of product.
- System administrator — Windows or Linux, networks, backups, number of workstations.
- Computer operator — data entry, typing speed, software.
- Computer and phone repair technician — diagnostics, replacing components, experience.
What to put in the vacancy
- Role and tasks — what exactly the person will do in the first months.
- Technologies — languages, frameworks, operating systems, software, tools.
- Level and experience — how many years, whether a portfolio is needed.
- Format — office, remote, hybrid; for remote work, the time zone.
- Employment — full-time, part-time, project, one-off task.
- Pay — monthly rate, hourly or per project; a salaried post or a freelance contract.
- Start and city, if presence is needed.
Example: “Need a system administrator for a small office with 25 computers in Sydney: Windows, domain, email, backups, network. 5/2 schedule, some site visits. At least 2 years of experience, can start in a week. Pay $680 to $850 a month.”
On pay: the amount depends on experience, technologies and the form of cooperation, and looks different for employment and for a freelancer. It is better to give a range than “negotiable”: candidates who are happy with that level will then reply. For remote work, clarify whether working hours in your time zone are needed and whether you supply equipment.
If you are looking for a repair technician, describe what the business works with: laptops, smartphones, printers, office PCs. Experience with one type of equipment does not always transfer to another.
How to compare candidates
Candidates reply in the chat and you see experience, start date and expected pay. The system shows the best offer by substance first, with reviews next to each. Compare not only the stack but also examples of work: what exactly the person did and whether you can look at code or cases. For a sysadmin, ask how he organised backups and access.
Do not skip a probation period and a short practical task. For a developer it can be a small task, for a sysadmin the analysis of a typical fault, for QA writing test cases for a real form. That way you see the approach to work, not just the CV.
Also discuss the form of cooperation and confidentiality: access to data and passwords is given not at once but after the probation period. Contacts are hidden, and only the person you choose gets your phone. More on the “How it works” page.
