Mini tractors: how to choose one, new or used
Who a mini tractor suits
A mini tractor is for a farm where a power tiller no longer copes but a full tractor is too much: ploughing, a rotavator, mowing, clearing, hauling loads. These are usually machines of a few hp up to 40 hp. The first step is to understand how much land you work and what implements you want to use.
New or used
New mini tractors, made in Australia or abroad, come with a warranty and easy access to service. Used ones, including imported models such as Japanese Kubota and Yanmar, are popular for the quality of their engines, but they arrive in varying condition. So ask about engine hours, the year, the condition of the hydraulics and whether the implements are matched. You also need papers: import clearance where it applies, and registration.
What to put in your request
- model or brand, for example Kubota B2650, or “something similar”;
- condition — new, used imported, used from the local market;
- power — for example, 24 hp;
- drive — 4×2 or 4×4: four-wheel drive helps on wet fields;
- implements in the set — rotavator, plough, trailer, mower;
- year and engine hours;
- buy or rent;
- delivery city;
- budget, if you want to name one.
Example: “I need a 24 hp mini tractor with 4×4 drive, with a rotavator, a plough and a trailer in the set. A used one not older than 2018 with up to 1,500 engine hours, or a new Kubota B2650. Delivery to Brisbane, budget up to $8,500.”
What affects the price and what to look at
- Engine and cooling: water-cooled is usually smoother, but needs care in the cold.
- Type of wheels: farm tyres or turf tyres; grip and the effect on the soil depend on them.
- Hydraulics and PTO: is there a rear power take-off, a hydraulic valve and a three-point linkage.
- For used: the state of the clutch, the oil, leaks, the gearbox, the battery.
- The set of implements: a plough, rotavator or trailer can cost as much as a separate machine.
Compare offers with the same set: a “bare” tractor and one with implements cannot be compared in sums. Ask also who is responsible for delivery, and whether there is a warranty and service in your region.
Common mistakes
The main mistake is judging only by power and price. For a mini tractor, track width, turning radius, tyre type and hydraulics for the implements matter. Another risk is a used imported tractor without checked papers and real engine hours. Ask for a photo of the instrument cluster and the plate, and a video of it working under load, and do not pay in advance without finished papers.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You write one request, and sellers reply with offers with photos, price and terms. The system compares them and shows the best-value one first, and sellers compete for your request. Only the seller you choose sees your phone number.
For smaller plots, look at walk-behind tractors, and for larger ones, farm tractors. Look for ploughs, rotavators and mowers for it in the “Implements & attachments” section.
