Petrol Tools: How to Buy a Chainsaw, Brush Cutter or Pump at a Good Price
Decide the job first, then the power
A chainsaw for firewood for winter and a chainsaw for trimming branches in a garden are different tools. Regular wood-cutting needs a more powerful model with a longer bar and a tough engine, while a garden needs only a light one. The same principle applies to trimmers: for a lawn, a line trimmer is enough, while for undergrowth and weeds you need a petrol brush cutter with a blade.
Power and engine size (cc) are given in hp or kW, but the figures alone don't guarantee quality. Two saws with the same figures can differ a lot in weight, vibration and working life. So it is worth naming the brand and model in your request.
What to put in your request
- type of tool — chainsaw, trimmer, brush cutter, water pump, cultivator, tiller, cutter;
- model or brand — for example Stihl MS 250 or “anything at the level of Husqvarna”;
- power — hp or kW, engine size;
- working parameters — bar length, working width, pump output;
- for what work — firewood, garden, farm plot, professional or occasional;
- new or second-hand and the acceptable condition;
- warranty, if you need one;
- delivery and budget, if you want to name one.
Example: “I am looking for a new chainsaw for cutting firewood, 2.5 hp, 45 cc, 40 cm bar, preferably Stihl or Husqvarna. With a 1-year warranty, delivery to Sydney, budget up to $430.”
New or second-hand: what to look at
Petrol tools wear unevenly: the engine may be fine, while the bar, sprocket or carburettor need replacing. For a used one, ask about running hours, signs of repair, the state of the piston and cylinder, and whether it starts easily from cold. It is a good sign if the seller is ready to show it starting on video.
For a new one, the warranty and a service centre are valuable: you will need spare parts and bar sharpening many times. Ask what is included: a spare chain, a case or a bar cover. For two-stroke models, see the maker's manual for the petrol-to-oil ratio, which depends on the engine.
How to compare offers
Compare on the same parameters: bar length, chain pitch, power, weight and what is in the box (case, spanner, protective cover). A “cheaper” offer without a bar or without a warranty is not better value. Also find out who will do warranty repairs and where, because sending it to another city takes weeks.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You write your request once, and tool sellers reply in a chat: what exactly they offer, the price, the warranty and delivery. It is free for the buyer. Sellers see where they rank and compete for the request, so the price often comes out better. BlaBlaPrice shows the best-value offer first, with seller reviews alongside. Your phone number stays hidden until you choose a seller. Create a request or find out how it works.
