Voltage Stabiliser for Home and Flat: How to Choose and Buy

First, measure what is wrong with the voltage

A stabiliser is chosen for a specific problem. If the voltage sags far below normal, you need a wide input range; if it sometimes jumps up, protection against high voltage matters too. Before you write your request, it helps to measure the voltage with a multimeter or a socket with a display at different times of day. Then sellers will have something to go on.

Through BlaBlaPrice you describe the situation once, and sellers send offers. Only the seller you choose sees your contacts.

Types of stabilisers

  • Relay type is the most common and affordable, but switching between steps comes with a click and small voltage jumps.
  • Triac (thyristor) type switches without a click, is faster and quieter, and usually costs more.
  • Servo type adjusts the voltage smoothly, but is slower and has moving parts.
  • Inverter type (double conversion) gives the most stable voltage, but costs the most.

Power, phases and connection

Choose power with a margin over the total load: a stabiliser working at its limit heats up and wears out faster. For motors (pump, fridge, air conditioner), allow for starting currents. For a flat a single-phase model is usually enough, and for a house with a three-phase supply you need a three-phase model or three single-phase ones. It is better to have an electrician connect a whole-house stabiliser, and an air conditioner is often better connected on its own.

Think about cooling and noise separately. Powerful models heat up and have a fan, so don't put them in a closed cupboard or a bedroom. For a flat, also think about space: a stabiliser of a few kilowatts takes up a noticeable volume.

One more point: some stabilisers have built-in protection against overheating, overload and short circuit, while others have only one of these. When the mains has frequent swings, this protection matters as much as power.

What to put in your request

  • What to connect: flat, house, air conditioner, fridge, pump.
  • Power in kW or kVA.
  • Stabiliser type.
  • Phases: one or three.
  • Mains voltage: how far it sags or jumps.
  • Brand and model, if you have already chosen.
  • Connection: whether you need an electrician, wall or floor mounting.
  • New or used, city, budget.

Example: “I need a new single-phase stabiliser for a whole flat, 10 kVA, triac type, voltage sags badly in the evening. With connection by an electrician, wall-mounted. Brisbane, budget up to $430.”

How to compare offers

Compare the real input voltage range, not only the rated power: at low voltage the output power of some models drops. Ask about accuracy of stabilisation, response time, protections and the warranty. Check whether the price includes connection, an input breaker and mounting.

BlaBlaPrice shows the best-value offer first, and you can see reviews next to each seller. Sellers see their place among the others, so they compete for your request. How it works is explained here.

A stabiliser doesn't keep the lights on during a power cut, so for that you will need a UPS or a generator.

Questions and answers

What stabiliser power should I choose?

Add up the power of the appliances that run at the same time and leave a margin, especially for motors. Write this in your request and sellers will help you pick a model.

Relay or triac?

A relay type is cheaper, but clicks when switching. A triac type is quieter and faster, and usually costs more.

Do I need an electrician to connect it?

For a whole-house or whole-flat stabiliser it is better to leave it to an electrician. Say in your request that you need it connected.

Does a stabiliser work during a power cut?

No, it only evens out the voltage of the mains. For backup you need a UPS or a generator.
