How to find an auditor: external, internal and tax audit
Which audit do you need
An external auditor checks a company's financial statements from outside and confirms that they are reliable. An internal auditor is on the staff, checks processes, controls and risks, and reports to management. A tax audit looks for tax risks, and due diligence assesses a company before it is bought or invested in. These are different skills, and searching for “just an auditor” does not work well.
What to put in the request
- Type of audit — external, internal, tax, due diligence.
- Certificates — Chartered Accountant, ACCA, CIA.
- Standards — Ind AS, IFRS or other. This changes the profile a lot.
- Salary — amount, bonuses separately.
- Place of work — city, office or hybrid, for example Toronto, hybrid.
- Hours — five days a week, allowing for the reporting season.
- Terms — on the payroll or freelance, permanent or for a project.
- Experience — in years, in an audit firm or in a company.
Example request
“A group of companies in Toronto needs an internal auditor. Checking business processes, risk assessment, reports to management. Knowledge of Ind AS, a CA, ACCA or CIA qualification is a plus. At least 3 years of audit experience, hybrid format, five days a week, pay from $1,000 a month, on the payroll.”
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You describe the job once in your own words. The request is checked: no ads or contact details in the text, and you get hints on what is missing. Then candidates in your region reply in the chat with experience, certificates, pay expectations and joining date. BlaBlaPrice shows the strongest replies first, and the reviews of each candidate are visible next to it. Your phone is hidden, and you do not pay for the search. Read more on the “How it works” page.
How to check a candidate
Ask whether the candidate has worked in your industry. Trade, manufacturing and construction have different risks, and spotting them comes with practice.
Ask them to describe the hardest audit they did: what they found, how the risk was assessed and what they suggested changing. A practical case, such as analysing a small set of journal entries, shows more than a long CV. Ask about standards separately: who works under Ind AS or IFRS and who only under local rules.
A common mistake is to hire an internal auditor and expect bookkeeping from them. The roles differ: an auditor checks, and an accountant keeps the books. Also agree on independence: an internal auditor should report to senior management, otherwise their findings will change little.
