Camera and video equipment hire: camera, lens, lighting
First the task of the shoot, then the camera
A wedding, a music video, an interview and a trip need different equipment. For a wedding, fast lenses and two batteries matter, for a music video a stabiliser and lighting, for a stream a camera that runs a long time without overheating, and a microphone. If you name the task, the equipment owner will usually tell you what is missing.
Do not focus only on the body. A lens often affects the picture more than the camera, and memory cards, batteries and a tripod are often charged separately in hire.
What to put in your request
- What to rent — body, lens, lighting, stabiliser, action camera, drone, microphone.
- Brand and model — for example, Sony A7 IV, if you have already chosen.
- Kit — lenses (say 24–70), number of batteries, memory cards, tripod, mounts.
- What for — a wedding, a music video, a trip, a broadcast.
- Term — dates and number of days, the time of collection and return.
- With or without an operator — whether you need only equipment or a professional too.
- Delivery — collection, or bring and take back.
- Deposit — whether you can leave one or want none.
- City or area and budget.
Example request
“I need a Sony A7 IV mirrorless camera with a 24–70 f/2.8 lens, two batteries and two memory cards for 2 days, 14–15 November, to shoot a music video. No operator, I will collect it in Toronto, budget up to $49 a day.”
How to check the equipment before paying
Ask to see a photo or video taken with this exact unit and find out the shutter count, if it matters. Ask whether the sensor is clean, whether the lenses have scratches and whether the autofocus works. On the spot, check everything before you hand over the deposit: switch on the camera, take a few frames, inspect the body.
When comparing offers, count the full kit: a body without a battery and a card is not the same as a set ready to shoot. Also ask about insurance or responsibility for damage, and about the chance to extend the hire if the shoot runs over.
How BlaBlaPrice helps
You write a request in your own words, and hire studios and photographers reply in the chat with the kit, the price and the terms. Each sees their place among the others, so they compete for your request, and you compare ready options. Contacts stay hidden until you choose. More: how it works.
A common mistake is taking equipment at random, with no spare: for a long shoot one battery is not enough and the card runs out of space. Take a spare battery and a larger card, and for video a fast card that can hold the bitrate you need. It is also worth asking for a test shoot or a short briefing if the model is unfamiliar to you.
For general electronics there is a separate section, appliance and electronics hire, and for events, event supplies hire.
