Men's canvas shoes: Converse, Vans and others, offers at a good price
Canvas shoes are about the model and the sole
Canvas shoes differ from trainers in having a flat rubber sole and an upper of fabric, leather or suede. The classics are the Converse Chuck 70 and the Vans Old Skool. They are easy to fake, so original or replica is the main question.
The Chuck 70 and the Chuck Taylor are different: the 70 has denser canvas, a softer insole and a higher sole profile. The standard models cost less but differ in comfort. So it is better to name the exact model in your request, not just the brand.
Height, material and season
- High-tops: hold the ankle and suit the cooler months, but are hotter in hot weather;
- Low-tops: light and versatile for the city and for summer;
- Textile (canvas): breathes and dries fast, but lets water in;
- Leather and suede: last longer and hold their shape better; suede is afraid of water;
- Denim: comfortable in warm weather.
If you are looking for second-hand, check the state of the sole near the toe and the inner insole: they wear first. The rubber toe cap should be intact and the glue free of separation.
What to put in your request
- Model: brand and exact name, for example Converse Chuck 70;
- Height: high-top or low-top;
- Material: canvas, leather, suede, denim;
- Size: UK size or insole length; size charts of different brands differ;
- Original or replica: say plainly what is acceptable;
- Condition: new or second-hand, and what wear is acceptable;
- Colour: white, black;
- Delivery city and budget: for example, up to $70.
Example: “I'm looking for new original Converse Chuck 70 high-tops, black, UK size 8 (insole 27 cm). Delivery to Vancouver by courier, budget up to $70.”
How to compare offers
Ask for real photos of the sole, the inner label and the box. A seller selling originals usually has no problem showing them. For second-hand, ask about wear on the sole and the inside. Check the return terms in case the size does not fit: canvas shoes are better tried on than guessed by the number.
On BlaBlaPrice you describe the model you want once, and sellers send offers themselves. They see their place among competitors and compete on terms, so the price often comes out better. The best-value offer is shown first, with reviews of the seller next to it. More on the “How it works” page.
Common mistakes
Trusting an “original” at a very low price. Taking the size out of habit, although in canvas shoes it often differs from trainers. Washing white canvas in the machine, so the sole comes unglued.
For sport, look at trainers, and for the office, formal shoes or loafers and slip-ons.
