Drone repair after a crash: gimbal, arms, motors, FPV
What people usually come with
Typical cases after crashes: damaged propellers and arms, a broken camera gimbal, a failed motor or speed controller, a smashed camera, no video, a calibration or firmware error. For FPV drones there is also board soldering, replacing the flight controller and setting up in the configurator.
Camera drones such as DJI and self-built FPV drones are repaired very differently. For the first, original modules and service procedures matter. For the second, the skill is in assembling and tuning a system from separate components.
What to put in your request
- type of drone — DJI camera drone, FPV, agricultural;
- the model — for example, DJI Mavic 3 or a 7-inch FPV;
- what happened — after a crash, broken gimbal, arm, motor, no video, firmware glitch;
- original or compatible — you need original parts, compatible ones will do, or you already have the parts;
- number of drones — one or a batch, for example 10;
- time, city or sending by courier;
- warranty on the repair and budget.
Example: “DJI Mavic 3 after a crash: the camera gimbal is broken and there is a crack on an arm. I need a check-up and a gimbal replacement, preferably with original parts. Toronto, I will send it by courier, by the weekend, 1-month warranty, budget up to $130.”
Original or compatible
This is the main question for the price. Original modules usually work better with the firmware and calibration. Compatible parts can be cheaper but sometimes need extra tuning. An honest technician will explain the difference for your model and will not promise “like new” where that is impossible.
For drones used for work, such as aerial photography, a re-check is also important: a test flight after the repair, a steady gimbal and no vibration.
How to compare offers
- Is the diagnosis a separate service, and is it counted towards the repair?
- What is the price of the parts, and is the type stated: original or compatible?
- Does the technician do a test flight and calibration after the replacement?
- What is the time? Some parts have to be ordered.
- Does the technician work with your platform and have done similar repairs?
A common mistake is to send a drone with a damaged body and its battery inside. Lithium batteries are dangerous after an impact, and they must be packed carefully or sent separately as the service centre instructs. Agree on the packing in advance.
