Food processor, blender or mixer: how to buy well

First say what you cook

This category brings together different appliances that are easy to mix up. So the right choice starts with your kitchen, not with a brand.

  • A food processor slices, grates and kneads dough, an all-rounder for everyday cooking.
  • A stand mixer is built for dough, creams and meringues, with the bowl sitting on a base.
  • An immersion (hand) blender is handy for soups and smoothies, and easy to wash.
  • A jug blender crushes ice and fruit better.
  • A chopper quickly chops herbs, vegetables and nuts.
  • A mincer is for minced meat; with an attachment, for sausages too.
  • A juicer is a separate device for juices.

What really affects the price

Power in watts is not the only measure. A 1000 W stand mixer with metal gears lasts longer than a plastic one of the same power. The bowl material matters too (metal, glass, odour-free plastic), as do the number of attachments and the warranty. For a mincer, look for a reverse function and metal gears.

What to put in your request

  • Type of appliance — food processor, mixer, blender, chopper, mincer.
  • Model — brand and exact name, for example Bosch MUM5.
  • Power and bowl capacity.
  • Attachments — graters, dough hook, sausage attachment, ice crushing.
  • New or used.
  • Warranty — brand or from the seller.
  • Delivery — courier and your city.
  • Budget.

Example: “Looking for a stand mixer with a 4 l bowl, power from 1000 W, with a dough hook and a whisk. New, with brand warranty. Courier delivery to Toronto, budget up to $200.”

How to compare offers

Often two offers for the same model differ in what is included: one has all the attachments, the other only the basic ones. Make sure you are comparing like with like. Ask whether spare parts are on sale, such as a bowl, a hook or blades: they are easier to find for popular brands.

When buying used, look for play in the drive, the condition of the attachments and motor noise. Ask for a video of it working at different speeds.

For a mincer, ask about the material of the auger and the blade, power in reverse mode and a set of plates with different hole sizes. For a blender, ask about the jug material (glass or plastic) and whether it can go in the dishwasher. For a mixer, ask whether the bowl comes off easily and whether there is overheat protection.

How BlaBlaPrice helps

You describe the appliance you need once. Sellers reply with offers in chat with the price, what is included and delivery, and the platform shows the best-value one first. Reviews of each seller are visible, and your contacts stay hidden until you share them yourself. More on the How it works page.

Questions and answers

How is a food processor different from a blender?

A food processor slices, grates and kneads, while a blender mixes and purees liquid and soft foods. For soups and smoothies a blender is usually enough.

What power do I need for dough?

For regular kneading of stiff dough take a mixer or processor with a powerful motor and metal gears. Choose the model with the sellers, telling them how much you bake.

Can I buy a mincer with a sausage attachment?

Yes, mention the attachment in the request. Sellers will say what is in the kit.

Is it worth buying a used food processor?

It can be, if the seller shows a video of it working and describes the condition of the drive and the attachments. Ask the reason for selling too.
