Heating installation for a house or flat: what to state and what to expect
Heating is a system, not a set of radiators
When you order heating, you pay for more than radiators. The system includes a heat source (a gas, electric or solid-fuel boiler, or a heat pump), pipes and layout, radiators or underfloor heating, a pump, an expansion tank, a safety group and controls. If one of these is missing from the quote, the price looks attractive, but extra charges appear later.
The layout can be two-pipe, manifold (radial) or single-pipe. A manifold layout gives more even heat but needs more pipe and space for the manifold cabinet. Pipes are made of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX), polypropylene (PPR) or multilayer pipe, and this choice affects the cost too.
Central heating matters mostly in cold regions and in the hills, where winters are cold.
What to put in your request
- What to install — heating from scratch, replacing the system, individual radiators, underfloor heating, boiler connection.
- Heated area — for example, a house of 1,200 sq ft.
- Heat source — the type and model of boiler, if already chosen.
- Scope — number of radiators, area of underfloor heating.
- Pipes and layout — if you have preferences.
- Equipment — what you buy yourself and what the contractor supplies.
- Property, address, timing, budget.
Example: “Dehradun, private house of 1,200 sq ft. I need heating installed: a condensing gas boiler, 10 radiators and underfloor heating over 400 sq ft, PEX manifold layout. I will supply the boiler, the contractor the rest. Finish before winter, budget up to $5,100.”
How to compare offers
Quotes from different technicians drift apart easily when each builds their own package. So ask them to list:
- the makes of boiler, pipes, radiators, manifolds and pump, not just “radiators”;
- whether there is a heat-loss calculation and a diagram, or whether they estimate by eye;
- whether commissioning and pressure testing of the system are included;
- installation of a chimney or coaxial flue, if needed;
- the warranty on work and equipment.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You describe the job in a request on the home page, and technicians and installation companies in your area reply in chat. They can see where their offer stands, so they can improve their terms. You see reviews next to the offers, and your contacts stay hidden until you choose a contractor. More on the “How it works” page.
Common mistakes
Most often people order a system without a heat-loss calculation, and end up with too few or too many radiators. The second mistake is not planning where the boiler will stand and how the flue and ventilation work. The third is starting work without sorting out the gas connection: gas is connected under separate rules, so ask the technician and the gas supplier what is needed.
