Kids' outerwear: how to buy a jacket or snowsuit at a good price
Season and temperature first, brand second
The most common mistake is buying something “for winter” without being specific. A child who plays outside twice a day in the cold and a child who is driven to school need different insulation. So say in your request what temperature you are shopping for: down to 0 °C, down to −10 °C, or just a light jacket for cooler evenings and the rainy season.
Look at the filling and the membrane too. The warmer a garment is, the thicker it gets, but waterproof snowsuits from good brands usually state a temperature range. Ask the seller for that range instead of trusting the word “warm”.
Size: buy for this season, not for growing into
Go by height in centimetres, not by age. Many snowsuits have adjustable cuffs and leg lengths, so you can take a little extra room. But never go up more than one size: in oversized clothes a child feels cold, and long sleeves get in the way of play.
What to put in your request
- type of clothing — snowsuit, jacket, coat, parka, puffer, raincoat or windcheater;
- your child's height or age;
- season and insulation — winter, light jacket, down to what temperature;
- for whom — boy, girl or unisex;
- brand and colour, if they matter;
- new or used, and what condition is acceptable;
- city and delivery, plus your budget if you want to name one.
“I need a winter snowsuit for a boy, height 98 cm, for mountain cold, navy blue. New or used in good condition, a good-quality brand. Courier delivery to Toronto, budget up to $84.”
How to compare offers and where to save
Children grow fast, so a good used garment from a known brand is often a smarter buy than new clothes from an unknown maker. For used items, ask about the condition of the waterproof layer, zips and cuffs, and ask for a photo of it on a child. For new ones, ask about the filling, whether the lining is removable and whether there are reflective strips.
Compare offers for the same height and the same temperature rating. It also works out cheaper to buy off-season: sellers are more willing to cut prices when they want to clear the rest of a collection.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You describe what you need once, and sellers of children's clothing reply with offers in the chat, with photos, price and terms. It is free for buyers. Sellers see where they stand among the others, so they compete for your request. BlaBlaPrice shows the best-value offer first, with seller reviews right next to it.
