How to find a lathe operator: manual lathes, skill level, piece rate

Manual lathe operator or CNC operator

A lathe operator machines round parts: shafts, bushes, flanges and threaded fittings. Classic work on a manual lathe means guiding the cutting tool by hand and having a good feel for the metal; on a CNC lathe the person works more with a program. These are different skills, so in the job post say which type of machine you have and whether you need someone only to run it or to set it up as well.

Parts, accuracy and paperwork

The work can be one-off parts from a drawing or batch production. One-offs need quick reading of drawings, choice of tools and holding tolerances; batches need consistency and speed. Ask which parts the person has turned, what accuracy they reached, what they measured with, and whether they clamp and set up the job themselves. A trade certificate or grade says something about the level, but asking for examples of their work is more useful.

Also think about tools and fixtures: cutting tools, measuring instruments, chucks, and whether the candidate uses their own. Lathe operators often bring their own measuring tools, and it is worth agreeing this in advance.

What to put in the job post

  • Machine type — manual, CNC;
  • Which parts — one-off from drawings or batch;
  • Skill level — for example formally trained, or years on the machine;
  • Experience — how many years;
  • Pay — monthly salary or piece rate, bonuses;
  • Workplace — city and area;
  • Hours — regular day or shifts;
  • Terms — permanent, on the payroll.

Example: “Lathe operator needed in Calgary for a manual lathe. One-off parts from drawings, formally qualified, 3+ years of experience. Six-day week, on the payroll, from $460 a month plus piece rate.”

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

You create one job request instead of sending it to every site. It is checked for ads and stray contact details, and you get hints on what is missing. Candidates in your area answer in chat: skills, experience, machines, when they can join and what pay suits them. Reviews are shown next to each reply. The phone number stays hidden until you choose someone. More in “How it works”.

How to check a lathe operator

The most reliable test is a trial part on your lathe, measured afterwards. Ask how the person sets the tool, chooses speeds and feeds, and what they do when a part goes out of tolerance. Agree on pay for the trial day. For piece-rate pay, show a sample drawing and the rate for it, so there are no arguments after the first month. If you need other workshop trades at the same time, see a fitter, a welder or a design engineer.

Questions and answers

How is a lathe operator different from a CNC operator?

A lathe operator works a manual machine by hand, while a CNC operator runs the machine from a program. Say in the post which machine you have.

Piece rate or salary for a lathe operator?

Piece rate motivates on batch parts; a salary is easier for one-off jobs. State the scheme and rates so the candidate can work out the earnings.

How can I check skills without long conversations?

Offer a trial part from a drawing and measure the result. It is quicker and fairer than judging only by qualifications.

Does the employer pay to search on BlaBlaPrice?

No, it is free for the person who posts the request. Contacts are opened only to the candidate you choose.
