Mini loader: hire with an operator or buy one

Hire or buy a mini loader

A mini loader (a skid-steer, often called a “Bobcat” after the best-known maker) is needed on cramped sites: clearing a plot, taking away soil, levelling an area, lifting pallets. If the work lasts a few days, it is usually better value to hire the machine with an operator. People buy when the machine works regularly.

In your request, say straight away what you are looking for: a service with an operator, hire without an operator, or a purchase. Who answers you depends on it.

What affects the cost

  • Type: wheeled skid-steer or tracked. Tracked ones are better on soft ground.
  • Load capacity: from a few hundred kilograms to over a tonne. A bigger machine costs more, but is faster.
  • Attachments: bucket, forks, breaker, auger, brush, milling head. Each extra attachment is often charged separately.
  • Engine hours and state of the hydraulics, and for hire also the length: the rate per day or week is usually different from the rate per hour.
  • Transport: bringing the machine to the site is often a separate line on the bill, especially outside the city.

What to write in your request

  • buy or hire — with or without an operator;
  • scope of work — for example take away 30 m³ of soil, clear a site;
  • attachments — bucket, breaker, forks;
  • city and access to the site: width of the gate, slope, state of the road;
  • hire period — a few hours, a shift or a week;
  • model and load capacity, if you have already chosen;
  • year and engine hours — for a purchase;
  • budget, if you want to state it.

Example: “I need a mini loader with an operator in Ottawa for 6 hours. I need to cut and remove about 30 m³ of soil from the yard, the gate is 2.5 m wide. I need a bucket, no breaker. Budget up to $14 per hour.”

Common mistakes

Most often people do not allow for the width of the access: in a cramped yard the overall width of the machine matters, not only the lifting capacity. The second mistake is to order a machine without the right attachment and then pay for a second visit. The third is not to clarify what happens to the soil after the work: who takes it away, where to and at whose cost. Discuss it in advance and write it in your request.

How to compare the answers

Do not compare only the hourly rate. Ask about the minimum booking (often 4 or 6 hours), the cost of bringing the machine and whether idle time is charged. Find out whether fuel is in the price. Ask them to name the model and load capacity: a small and a large machine differ in productivity.

When buying used, ask for photos of the chassis, hydraulic hoses and bucket, and a video of it starting. Ask about the service history and the real engine hours. Do not pay in advance until you have seen the machine or received confirmed papers.

How BlaBlaPrice helps

Instead of calling listings, you write one request, and owners and sellers of heavy equipment reply in the chat with a price, terms and the date they can come. The system compares the offers and shows the best one first, judged on what is offered, and sellers see their place and improve their terms. Contacts stay hidden until you choose a provider.

For bigger volumes, look at excavators, and for taking soil away, tipper trucks. If you just need to lift pallets in a warehouse, look at forklifts and loaders.

Questions and answers

What is the minimum number of hours I can hire for?

It depends on the owner: a minimum booking of a few hours often applies. Write your volume in the request, and sellers will state their terms.

Which is better for taking soil away: a mini loader or an excavator?

A mini loader suits a small site with a tight access. For deep trenches and big volumes you need an excavator.

Are fuel and delivery of the machine in the price?

Not always. Ask each one whether bringing the machine and the fuel are charged separately.

What must I check on a used mini loader?

Engine hours, hydraulics for leaks, the undercarriage and the boom joints. Ask for a video of it working under load.
