Pump for a borewell or open well: how to choose and buy at a good price
First find out the water source
You cannot choose a pump without the starting data. Find out the depth of the borewell or well, the water level (the dynamic one, not only the static one), the distance to the house and the lift height. You also need the diameter of the casing pipe: a powerful pump will not fit into a narrow pipe. These figures in your request rule out unsuitable options at once.
Types of pump
- Borewell (submersible) — for deep borewells, with the diameter in inches, for example 3" or 4".
- Open-well pump — for shallow wells and open water.
- Pump set with pressure tank — a surface pump with a pressure tank, suitable for shallow water.
- Drainage and sewage — for pumping out a flooded basement or drainage.
- Circulation and booster — for heating or for raising pressure in a water supply.
Head, flow, power
Flow shows how much water the pump delivers per hour (m³/h or litres per minute). Head is the height it can lift the water to, and it includes the depth, the height and the losses along the pipes. The motor power in kW and the supply (single-phase or three-phase) depend on these figures. Don't choose a pump by “power” alone: its working point must fit your case. If power cuts are common where you live, ask about pumps that start reliably on low or fluctuating voltage.
What to put in your request
- Type of pump — borewell, pump set, drainage, circulation.
- Source and depth — for example a 60 m borewell.
- Flow and head — 3 m³/h, head 60 m.
- Power — kW and supply.
- Diameter — of the casing pipe or connection.
- Make and model — if you have a preference.
- Fitting — controls, pressure tank, pipe connection.
- Address and budget.
Example: “I need a submersible pump for a 4-inch borewell, 60 m deep, 3 m³/h, head about 60 m, single-phase. With a starter and fitting. Toronto, budget up to $340.”
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
The price of a pump depends on the model, availability and the set: cable, controls, pressure tank. Instead of calling shops, you write one request, and sellers answer in the chat with the model, price, what is in the set and delivery. Each seller sees where their offer ranks and improves the terms if needed. BlaBlaPrice shows the best offer first, and the seller's reviews are next to it. Your phone is hidden until you choose a seller yourself. How it works is explained on the How it works page.
How to compare offers
Compare not the brand but the specifications: the head and flow at your depth. Ask whether the price includes a cable of the right length, a rope, a non-return valve, dry-run protection and a control panel. Find out the warranty and whether there is service in your city. A typical mistake is buying a pump that is too powerful: it drains the water faster and wears out. Another is ignoring the diameter, so the pump simply does not go down the borewell.
For the connection you will need pipes and fittings, which are worth a separate request or the plumbing category. Power and controls often need electrical supplies, and for heating see heating.
