Tipper semi-trailers: steel or aluminium, how to buy well

The load first, then the body

A tipper semi-trailer carries stone chips, sand, grain, soil and scrap metal. The load decides the body material and shape. For crushed stone and abrasives you take strong steel with reinforced walls. An aluminium body is lighter, so it lets you carry more useful load, but a large lump can damage it more easily.

The type of unloading matters too: rear is the most common, while side or combined gives flexibility on tight sites.

What to put in your request

  • Body volume — for example 30 m³.
  • Make — Wielton, Schmitz, Stas or another.
  • Year — from which year you are looking.
  • Number of axles — usually 3.
  • Body material — steel, aluminium, Hardox.
  • Type of unloading — rear, side.
  • Equipment — cover, hydraulics, lift axle.
  • Papers — registered, import duty paid.
  • Technical condition — no repairs needed or minor repair acceptable.
  • City and budget, if you want to state it.

Example: “Looking for a Wielton tipper semi-trailer from 2015, aluminium body of 30 m³, three axles, rear unloading, with a cover. Papers in Canada, no repairs needed. Montreal, budget up to $42,000.”

Weak spots of a tipper

The most vulnerable parts are the hydraulic ram and the hinges the body lifts on. Ask to see the body raised and lowered. There should be no leaks, jerks or leaning. Inspect the subframe under the body, the tailgate and its locks.

Check the body for dents, cracks and patched areas, especially near the floor. Steel tends to rust, aluminium to crack at the welds. Also inspect the axles, hubs, brakes and tyres.

How to compare offers

  • The same volume and material: steel and aluminium cannot be compared on price alone.
  • Empty weight: the lighter it is, the more useful load you carry.
  • The state of the hydraulics and the repair history of the body.
  • Papers and customs clearance.

The useful load per trip often matters more than a small difference in price: a lighter aluminium body can pay for itself.

The first mistake is to buy a semi-trailer without checking it against the tractor unit: a tipper needs a power take-off and hydraulics, so check that yours has them. The second is to underestimate body wear: thin steel in a stone quarry does not last long. The third is to take too big a volume for a heavy load, and the semi-trailer ends up overloaded before it is full. Also ask them to measure the thickness of the body walls where wear is highest: it is a quick way to judge the remaining life. Finally, arrange to inspect the body when raised: that shows whether there are cracks under the platform.

How searching works on BlaBlaPrice

You write one request, and sellers reply in the chat with offers giving the price or what it depends on, terms and photos. The request is checked, and you get hints on what is missing. The best-fitting offer is shown first, with reviews of the seller. Sellers see their place among the others and can improve their terms. Contacts are opened only to the one you choose. More on the “How it works” page.

For farming look at grain trailers, and for other jobs, semi-trailers and dropside ones.

Questions and answers

Which is better: a steel or an aluminium body?

Steel is stronger for abrasives, while aluminium is lighter and gives more useful load. The choice depends on what you carry.

What should I check in the hydraulics?

Smooth lifting, and no leaks or leaning. Ask to see the body work.

Do I need a cover?

For grain and small loads it helps, while for crushed stone it is usually optional. State it in the request.

Is BlaBlaPrice free for the buyer?

Yes, the buyer pays nothing. Sellers pay a small fee only when they are chosen.
