Tumble dryer: heat pump, condenser or vented
The drying type affects everything
There are three main types of tumble dryer, and they decide the price, the electricity use and the installation. Heat pump dryers are economical and gentle on fabrics, but cost more. Condenser dryers collect the moisture in a tank or drain it into a pipe, and can go in any room. Vented dryers push the damp air outside, so they need a vent duct or a window nearby.
In a flat people most often choose a heat pump or a condenser model. Take a vented one only if you have somewhere to send the steam.
What to put in your request
- load — usually it should match your washing machine or be a little bigger;
- drying type — heat pump, condenser, vented;
- installation — standalone, stacked over the washing machine, built-in;
- dimensions — width, depth and height of the space;
- features — programmes, steam, Wi-Fi, energy rating, draining the condensate into a pipe;
- brand and model, new or used;
- delivery and installation, city and budget.
Example: “I need a new 8 kg heat pump tumble dryer, top energy rating, to stack over my LG washing machine, with condensate drained into a pipe. Toronto, delivery to the 5th floor with installation. Budget up to $1,000.”
Stacking over a washing machine: an easy place to go wrong
Putting a dryer on top of a washing machine needs a special stacking kit and suitable dimensions on both machines. Not every dryer fits every washer: the width must match and the fixing must be right. So always name your washing machine model in the request. Ask whether the kit is included in the price, as it is sometimes sold separately.
What it costs to run
A heat pump costs more to buy but uses less electricity, and that adds up if you dry often. A condenser is cheaper but uses more. Compare the energy rating and the use per cycle, not just the starting price. Ask about upkeep too: the lint filter is cleaned after every drying, and in some models the heat exchanger needs cleaning from time to time.
Not every fabric can go in a dryer, so look for delicate programmes and check the care labels on your clothes.
