How to choose and buy a walk-behind tractor: diesel, petrol, with implements
What plots a walk-behind tractor is for
A walk-behind tractor is a middle option between a power tiller and a mini tractor. It pulls a plough, a rotavator, an earthing-up tool, a mower and a trailer, and suits a plot of up to a couple of acres. For a small vegetable garden a lighter tiller is enough, and for a big field a mini tractor is better. So the size of your plot is the first thing to know.
What affects the choice and the price
- Engine: petrol is lighter and cheaper, diesel is more economical on fuel and tougher under load, but heavier and dearer.
- Power: up to 6 hp for light work, 8–10 hp for ploughing and a trailer.
- Cooling: air cooling is simpler, water cooling is dearer but better for long work.
- Starting: a recoil starter is simple, an electric starter is more convenient, especially for a diesel.
- Gearbox, reverse gear and differential. They decide how the machine behaves when ploughing and turning.
- The set: rotavator blades, plough, wheels, earthing-up tool and trailer often come separately, and it is the set that changes the sum.
What to put in your request
- engine type — petrol or diesel;
- condition — new or used;
- power, for example 9 hp;
- implements in the set — rotavator, plough, trailer;
- model, if you have one, or a well-known make;
- plot size in acres and the type of soil;
- starting — recoil or electric starter;
- delivery city and the courier you prefer;
- budget, if you want to name one.
Example: “I need a new diesel walk-behind tractor of 9 hp with an electric starter, with a rotavator, plough and trailer in the set. A plot of about three-quarters of an acre, heavy soil. Courier delivery to Calgary, budget up to $1,300.”
How to compare offers
Check that everyone has priced the same set: otherwise a “cheap” offer will simply have no rotavator or wheels. Ask about the warranty and service, and about spare parts, especially belts, blades and bearings. For used ones, ask for a video of starting, photos of the gearbox, and the state of the belt and clutch. A sound walk-behind tractor starts easily and does not leak oil.
If you need the machine before the field work starts, send your request in advance: that way you have time to compare the offers and wait for delivery.
Common mistakes
Most often people buy a walk-behind tractor with a “reserve” of power, and then cannot control a heavy machine on a small plot. Or the opposite, they take a light model for virgin land. They also forget to check whether the hitch and the track width suit the implements they plan to buy. Match the sizes and the set before you pay.
How BlaBlaPrice helps
You write one request, and sellers reply with the price, the set and the delivery terms. The system compares the offers and shows the best one first, and sellers compete for your request. Your phone is hidden, and it is free for the buyer.
If your plot is smaller, look at power tillers; for larger areas, mini tractors. There are also separate implements and attachments.
