Winch for an SUV: pulling force, rope and mounting
First work out the pull
A winch is chosen by the weight of the vehicle. A common rule is that the pulling force should be about one and a half times the full weight of the vehicle, because in mud or on a steep climb the load grows. The pull is given in pounds (lbs) or kilograms; for example, 12,000 lbs is about 5.4 tonnes. For a light SUV smaller values are sometimes enough, but a heavy pickup or a fully loaded vehicle needs a stronger winch. Don’t go with too small a margin.
Electric or hand, 12 or 24 V
An electric winch runs on the vehicle’s battery, and the voltage must match the on-board system: 12 V for cars and most SUVs, 24 V for trucks. A hand winch suits small jobs, but takes effort. For an electric one, a battery in good condition is very important, and it is better to keep the engine running during use.
Rope: steel or synthetic
Steel rope resists wear and is cheaper, but it is heavier, can hurt your hands and is dangerous if it snaps. Synthetic rope is lighter and usually safer if it snaps, but it fears rubbing on sharp edges and needs protection from the sun. The length is usually 20–30 m, and it is worth taking some extra. Don’t forget the hook, the straps and gloves.
What to put in your request
- Winch type — electric or hand, voltage 12 or 24 V.
- Pulling force — for example, 12,000 lbs.
- For which vehicle — SUV, pickup, quad bike, trailer; the model, for example Toyota Land Cruiser.
- Rope — steel or synthetic, length, for example 25 m.
- Mounting — mounting plate, strong bumper or a portable winch.
- Maker — a particular brand or any other.
- Fitting — needed or not.
- City and budget.
Example: “I need a 12 V electric winch, 12,000 lbs pull, 25 m synthetic rope, with a mounting plate for a Toyota Land Cruiser. Fitting on the bumper needed. Courier delivery to Montreal, budget up to $510.”
What to compare
Whether the remote, wiring, fairlead and hook are in the set. What the winding speed is and the water protection rating. What the warranty is. For fitting, ask whether a reinforced bumper and a plate for your vehicle are needed. Fitting a winch without a prepared mount can be dangerous.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You write a request naming your vehicle, and sellers and fitters reply in the chat: which winch they advise, price, availability, timing. The site shows the offer with the best value first, with reviews next to it. Your phone stays hidden until you choose a seller. More on the “How it works” page.
For off-road trips a roof rack and a tyre inflator are also useful.
