Cat grooming: how to book a haircut and brushing at a good price
Does your cat need grooming
Short-haired cats usually manage without haircuts, and brushing is enough. But Persians, Maine Coons, Angoras and other long-haired breeds are prone to mats, especially on the belly, behind the ears and under the legs. If the mats have already tightened to the skin, it is better not to cut them with scissors at home: you can hurt the skin. A groomer can help here.
How the request works
You describe your cat and the service you want in a request, and groomers reply in the chat with a price, a date and terms. Before it is shown, the request is checked and you are told what details are missing. The offers are compared, and the best-value one is shown first, with reviews beside each. Your phone number stays hidden until you choose a provider. More in the How it works section.
What to include
- Service — hygiene trim, “lion cut”, undercoat brushing, bath, nail trimming, mat removal;
- Breed and coat — long or short, and whether the undercoat is thick;
- Coat condition — mats (where exactly), moulting, fleas;
- Behaviour — calm, bites, afraid of the dryer;
- Format — at a salon or a home visit;
- City, area and date;
- Budget, if you want to name it.
Example: “Persian cat, 4 years old, thick coat, mats on the belly and behind the ears, gets nervous with noise. I need mat removal and a lion cut, preferably with a home visit. Central, on Saturday. Budget up to HK$160.”
What the price depends on
The price is set by the length and thickness of the coat, the number of mats, the time the work takes, how difficult the cat is, and the visit. A very restless cat is sometimes clipped only under sedation, and that is prescribed by a vet, not a groomer. If someone offers to “just give a sedative”, ask who gives it and what with. Removing badly matted fur sometimes costs more than an ordinary haircut.
How to compare offers
Compare by content: what is included (washing, drying, nails, ear cleaning), whether cat-specific products are used, and whether the groomer has experience with cats in particular, which is not the same as dogs. Ask how the cat is held, whether it is left unattended, and whether you can be present. A visiting groomer does not move the cat in a vehicle, which lowers stress, but the visit may cost extra.
Common mistakes
Shaving a cat completely in summer “because of the heat” is unnecessary: the coat protects from overheating and sun. Not saying that the cat bites. Waiting until the mats become solid. For other animals there is general grooming and salons, and for skin problems it is better to see a vet.
