Antique furniture: how to find the right sideboard, chest or chair

Original, restored or reproduction

Three things affect the price of antique furniture most: the period, how well it has been preserved, and how much work has been done on it. An original early-20th-century piece in its first state is valued differently from a nicely restored one, and that again differs from a reproduction made to look old. Mid-century vintage furniture also has its buyers, but it is a different category: ask whether it is a true antique or simply vintage.

How to search with BlaBlaPrice

You write one request: which piece, which period or style, dimensions, city. It is checked before it is shown, and you are told what is missing. Antique dealers and private owners answer in the chat: what they offer, photos, condition, price, delivery or viewing terms. Reviews are shown next to each offer, and the best match is shown first. Only the seller you choose gets your contacts. See also How it works.

What to put in your request

  • Piece — wardrobe, chest of drawers, table, sofa, chair, sideboard, mirror, writing desk, trunk;
  • Period or style — 19th century, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, colonial, mid-century;
  • Condition — original, restored or needing restoration;
  • Material — teak, rosewood, oak, veneer, inlay, upholstery;
  • Dimensions — width, height, depth, or limits of your space;
  • Origin — country, maker, papers or attribution;
  • Budget and city, collection or delivery.

Example: “Looking for an Art Nouveau sideboard from the early 20th century, teak, width up to 140 cm, restored with nothing missing. Preferably European. Ipoh, collection or delivery by a freight carrier. Budget up to RM 3,900.”

What to check before you pay

Ask for photos from every side, including the back panel, drawers and inner parts: they show hand work, signs of woodworm, glue repairs and replaced parts. Ask about original fittings, keys and locks, whether there are woodworm holes, whether it smells of damp, and whether it was treated against pests. Restoration is not a minus if it is honestly described. For expensive pieces, ask for papers or an expert valuation.

Delivery and common mistakes

Large furniture needs careful transport: dismantling, wrapping, insurance. Ask who arranges it and who pays, and whether the piece will fit through doors, stairs and the lift. Antique furniture dislikes sudden changes in humidity, so do not place it right next to an air-conditioner vent after buying, and keep it away from damp walls in the rainy season. Mistakes include buying without checking the dimensions, believing in a “hundred-year-old” age without explanation, and not asking what has been replaced. See also art objects and collecting.

Questions and answers

How can I tell an antique from a reproduction?

By signs of hand work, the materials, the patina and the fittings. Ask for detailed photos and the story of its origin, and for an expert opinion on expensive pieces.

Is it bad if the furniture has been restored?

No, if the restoration is honestly described and well done. Ask for a list of what was replaced or repaired.

How do I move a large sideboard or wardrobe?

Agree with the seller on dismantling and packing, or use a freight carrier. Measure doors and stairs beforehand.

Does the buyer pay BlaBlaPrice anything?

No, it is free for buyers. A seller pays a small fee only when you choose that seller.
