Car stereo for your car: compare prices without a round of calls
First find out the format and the factory slot
The stereo has to physically fit the dashboard. Older cars often have a 1 DIN slot (about 50 mm high), newer ones more often 2 DIN (about 100 mm). There are also factory-fit stereos made exactly for the panel of a particular model, for example a Hyundai Creta. Then you need a trim frame and an adapter plug, so that nothing has to be cut.
If you don’t know what your car has, write the make, model and year: the seller will tell you which format fits.
Android, CarPlay or a plain stereo
Simple stereos play from USB and Bluetooth, and that is often enough. Android units give navigation, YouTube and apps, while CarPlay and Android Auto put your phone’s interface on the screen. For Android models, RAM and built-in memory matter, for example 4/64 GB: the speed depends on them.
The screen size must match the frame: 9 inches looks like a factory fit in some cars, and in others it hangs off the dashboard.
What to put in your request
- Car model — make, model, generation and year, for example Creta 2018;
- Format — 1 DIN, 2 DIN or factory-fit, with a frame;
- System — Android, CarPlay, Android Auto;
- Screen size — in inches;
- Memory — for Android, for example 4/64 GB;
- Functions — Bluetooth, GPS, reversing camera input, steering wheel buttons, DSP;
- Model or brand, if you have already chosen;
- Condition — new or used;
- Installation — fitted for you or self-collection;
- Budget.
Example: “I need a new factory-fit 9-inch Android stereo for a 2018 Hyundai Creta, 4/64 GB memory, CarPlay, Bluetooth, a camera input and support for the steering wheel buttons. With the frame and fitting in Ipoh, budget up to RM 730.”
How to compare offers
The same screen size, or even the same name, means nothing yet. Compare the real memory, the processor, whether there is DSP, and whether the steering wheel buttons work without an extra payment. Check whether the frame, the harness and the antenna are in the set. For a used one, ask about the working condition and whether you can test it on the spot.
Separately, ask them to agree the cost of fitting: it may be done by the seller’s own technicians or by a partner workshop.
