Exhaust system repair: silencer, flex pipe, catalytic converter
What an exhaust system consists of
From the engine to the end of the pipe run the manifold, the catalytic converter, the particulate filter (on diesels), the flex pipe, the resonator and the silencer. The exhaust works in a harsh environment: hot gases and moisture, plus damp roads and heavy rain. So the parts that usually fail are the silencer from corrosion, the flex pipe from vibration, and the gaskets with their studs.
Signs of trouble: a louder sound, a rattle under the floor, exhaust smell in the cabin, vibration, a catalytic converter error on the dashboard. Do not ignore a smell in the cabin: it is a safety issue.
What to put in your request
- what to do — replacing the silencer, resonator or flex pipe, welding, repairing or replacing the catalytic converter or particulate filter;
- make, model, year and engine — for example Suzuki Swift 1.2;
- symptoms — drones, rattles, smells of exhaust, a warning light is on;
- spare parts — original, universal, stainless steel, yours or the mechanic's;
- city, timing and budget.
Example: “Suzuki Swift 1.2, the silencer drones and there is a knocking under the floor, I suspect the flex pipe. I need a diagnosis and replacement, with a stainless steel flex pipe. Kuala Lumpur, today or tomorrow. Budget up to RM 140.”
Welding, replacement or a universal part
A burnt-through section can sometimes be welded, and this is the cheapest option, but only when the metal around it is still strong. If corrosion has spread over the whole silencer body, it is more correct to replace it. Universal parts are cheaper and are cut to fit the car, while original ones and good aftermarket ones fit more exactly and last longer. Stainless steel costs more but lasts longer.
The catalytic converter is a separate matter. Whether to repair or replace it depends on whether it has really failed, and whether the car must meet emission requirements. Let the mechanic diagnose first, instead of offering straight away to remove it.
One more detail that is easy to miss: the condition of the mounts and rubber hangers. If they are stretched, the new pipe will soon start rattling again, so the mechanic should replace them at the same time. Also ask whether the workshop has a lift: without one it is hard to inspect the system properly.
How it works through BlaBlaPrice
You describe the sound and the car in one request, and mechanics reply in the chat: what they propose, which part, the price of labour, whether a lift is needed, and when they can take the car. The site shows the best offer by substance first, with reviews next to it. Mechanics see their place and compete on terms, while your number stays hidden until you choose a provider.
What to compare and what mistakes to avoid
- the price of the part and the price of labour separately, not one figure;
- what material the part is made of and what the warranty is;
- whether gaskets and mounts are replaced, not the old ones put back;
- whether the noise is diagnosed, instead of replacing everything in sequence.
If the error may come from the engine or sensors, do car computer diagnostics. For a diesel, also see diesel fuel system repair. Other services are collected in the section “Car & motorcycle servicing”, and how the site works is on the page “How it works”.
