Foreign language teacher: how to choose one for your goal

The goal matters more than the language

“I want to learn English” can mean anything: speaking practice for travel, IELTS preparation, a job interview or admission to a school abroad. Each goal needs a different teacher. For an exam you need someone who knows the test format well. For speaking practice you need a lively speaker who can get you talking.

If you are preparing for an interview, for example for a study visa in Germany, look for a teacher who has worked on such tasks and knows the usual questions.

Native speaker or local teacher

  • A native speaker gives you natural pronunciation and conversation, but does not always explain grammar in a way a beginner finds easy.
  • A local teacher knows the typical difficulties of learners in Malaysia and can explain in your own language. For a beginner this is often more comfortable.

A certificate (CELTA, DELF, Goethe and others) helps, but results of past students and reviews matter even more.

How to search on BlaBlaPrice

You write one request in your own words: language, level, goal, format. It is checked and you are told what is missing. Teachers reply in the chat: price per lesson, experience, timetable, and whether there is a trial lesson. They can see where their offer ranks, so they often improve their terms. Reviews are shown next to each one. Your phone number stays hidden until you choose a teacher. Read more on the “How it works” page.

What to put in your request

  • Language — English, German, French, Spanish and so on.
  • Goal — speaking, an exam (IELTS, TOEFL), an interview, school, moving abroad.
  • Level — from zero, or A1 to C2 if you know it.
  • Learner's age — an adult or a school student's class.
  • Format — online or in person, one-to-one or in a group.
  • How often — for example, twice a week for 60 minutes.
  • Requirements for the teacher — native speaker, certificate, experience preparing for exams.
  • City (for in-person lessons) and budget per lesson.

Example: “Ipoh. I need German from zero, for an adult, with the goal of a visa interview in 2 months. Online or in person, twice a week for 60 minutes, preferably a teacher with experience in this kind of preparation. Budget up to RM 41 per lesson.”

How to compare offers

Ask whether there is a plan for the first 2–3 months and which materials are used. Check whether you pay per lesson or per package, and what happens if you reschedule. A good teacher starts with a level check and sets a realistic target.

Ask for a trial lesson, even a short one. It shows whether you are comfortable together. Do not believe promises like “you will learn the language in a month”: the result depends on regular lessons and practice at home.

To prepare for school exams look for tutors or national exam preparation, and for group options look at courses and training.

Questions and answers

How long does it take to learn a language?

It depends on your goal, how often you have lessons and how much you practise at home. After a level check, the teacher can give you realistic timelines.

Is online or in person better?

Online is convenient and gives you more teachers to choose from. In person it is sometimes easier to concentrate. Say in your request what suits you.

Do I need a native speaker?

For speaking practice it helps. For beginners or tricky grammar, a teacher who explains in your own language is often more comfortable.

Does the learner pay BlaBlaPrice?

No, the service is free for customers. A teacher pays a small fee only when you choose them.
