Head, eye and hearing protection: helmets, goggles, earplugs

The standard matters more than the looks

A helmet, safety glasses and ear defenders look the same in a “cheap” and a “proper” version, but they withstand very different things. So the first question should be not the brand but the protection class and whether it meets the standard.

  • Helmets — look for the safety certification mark required where you live and the standard marking; for work at height you need a chin strap, and a ratchet helps fit the size at the back of the head;
  • Glasses and face shields — look for the marking of the standard they meet, which shows resistance to impact of different force, and an anti-fog coating is critical in a workshop or in cold air;
  • Ear defenders and earplugs — the SNR level in decibels: for an ordinary workshop 25-30 dB is enough, and for an angle grinder or a drill you need more;
  • Welding masks — the darkness shade number, and an auto-darkening helmet is more convenient than a fixed lens.

What to put in your request

So that sellers compare like with like, state:

  • What exactly — helmet, glasses, face shield, ear defenders or earplugs;
  • Quantity — for a crew, the per-piece price in bulk may differ;
  • Protection class — the standard, SNR or shade number;
  • Features — chin strap, ratchet, whether the helmet fits with ear defenders or a shield;
  • For what work — construction, welding, woodworking, height;
  • Brand, colour and logo — if needed, for example white helmets for engineers and orange for workers;
  • City and budget — price per piece.

Example: “I need 20 construction helmets with the safety certification mark, with ratchet and chin strap, 10 white and 10 orange, company logo on all of them. Delivery to Ipoh, budget up to RM 25 per piece.”

How to compare offers

Ask the seller for the certificate or conformity document and a photo of the marking on the product. Helmets have a shelf life: plastic ages from sun and chemicals, so ask for the manufacturing date. For glasses, find out whether the lenses are scratch-resistant, and for ear defenders whether replacement ear cushions are available.

Create a request on BlaBlaPrice and sellers will send offers to the chat on their own. They can see where they stand among the others and adjust their terms, so this is usually better value than phoning shops. The best-value offer is shown first, with reviews beside it. The phone number is opened only to the seller you choose. Details are on the “How it works” page.

Common mistakes

People buy glasses “against dust” when they need protection from chemical splashes. They buy earplugs without checking the SNR and size, and they hurt after an hour. They buy a helmet without thinking of ear defenders, which then do not fit.

Protection is usually put together as a full kit: besides the head gear, add respiratory protection, work gloves and work clothing.

Questions and answers

How do I know a helmet meets the standard?

The shell should carry the standard marking, such as the safety certification mark, and a manufacturing date. Ask the seller for the conformity document and a photo of the marking.

What SNR level do I need for ear defenders?

It depends on the noise: for an average workshop about 25-30 dB is enough, and for very loud work you take a higher one. If you are unsure, state the type of work in the request.

Can a logo be put on helmets?

Yes, sellers usually offer printing or stickers. Write how many helmets and which logo in the request, and compare the cost and timing.

Can sellers see my phone number?

No, contacts are hidden. You pass them only to the seller you choose, and by the channel you pick yourself.
