Camera lens: how to choose and buy well

The mount is the first thing to know

A lens fits only its own mount: Canon EF or RF, Nikon F or Z, Sony E, Fuji X. Adapters exist, but they limit autofocus and add length. So in your request write the camera brand and the type of mount, not just “for Canon”.

Sensor format matters too. A full-frame lens works on a crop sensor, but a crop-only lens on a full-frame camera gives vignetting or automatic cropping. Also, on a crop sensor the focal length is “stretched”: 50 mm looks like roughly 75 to 80 mm.

Focal length and aperture

  • Wide angle (14 to 35 mm): landscapes, architecture, interiors.
  • Standard primes of 35 to 50 mm: versatile and fast, good for street and reportage.
  • Portrait lenses of 85 to 135 mm: nice background blur.
  • Telephoto lenses of 70-200 mm and longer: sport, wildlife.
  • Macro lenses for small details.

Aperture (f/1.4, f/1.8, f/2.8) shows how much light gets through. A fast lens works better in the dark and gives a blurrier background, but costs more and can be heavier.

What to put in your request

  • Mount - Canon EF/RF, Nikon F/Z, Sony E, Fuji X.
  • Focal length - for example, 50 mm or 24-70 mm.
  • Aperture - f/1.8, f/2.8 and so on.
  • Model - Sigma, Tamron, Canon, Nikon and others.
  • What for - portrait, landscape, sport, video, macro.
  • Sensor format - full frame or crop.
  • New or used.
  • Warranty.
  • Delivery, city, budget.

Example: “I need a Sigma 35 mm f/1.4 Art lens for Sony E (full frame), for portraits and reportage. Used with no fungus, scratches or dust inside, or new. Courier delivery to George Town. Budget up to RM 2,900.”

What to look at in a used lens

This is the main risk. Ask for a photo of the glass against the light: fungus looks like a cobweb, haze like a light film, and scratches show at an angle. Check that the zoom and focus rings turn smoothly and that the mount has no play. Autofocus should be quiet and not hang. If possible, ask for a few test shots.

How to compare offers

Compare the same model and version (for example, Mark I and Mark II are different lenses). Check what is included: hood, caps, pouch, box. For a new lens, ask about the official warranty, not just a “shop warranty”, because the terms differ.

How BlaBlaPrice helps

You describe the lens you need once, and sellers of photo gear reply in a chat with price, condition, photos and delivery. The platform shows the best offer by content first, and the seller's reviews help you choose. Nobody sees your phone number until you choose a seller. Also read “How it works”.

Questions and answers

Will a Canon EF lens fit a Canon RF mirrorless camera?

Yes, through a special adapter, but you need to know your camera exactly. It is better to give the model in your request so sellers can advise on compatibility.

What does an f/1.8 aperture mean?

It is the widest opening of the lens. The smaller the number, the more light and the stronger the background blur.

How do I check a used lens for fungus?

Look at the glass against the light: fungus looks like cobwebs or patches. Ask for a suitable photo and, if you can, look at the glass in person.

Which lens should I choose for portraits?

People often take 50, 85 or 35 mm primes with an aperture of f/1.4 to f/1.8. It finally depends on your camera and the space you shoot in.
