Livestock and poultry feed: how to order compound feed, grain and hay
Count the price per kilogram of useful feed
Feed for a farm or a yard is bought in large amounts, so even a small difference per kilogram soon adds up. But you cannot compare “bag with bag”: two feeds of the same kind can differ in composition and protein. So first check that the feed suits your animals, and only then look at the price per kilogram including delivery.
Remember that feed depends on the growth stage. Broilers get separate “starter”, “grower” and “finisher” mixes, laying hens have their own, and calves, pigs and cattle have theirs. Feeding everything with one mix is usually a poor deal.
What to check for each kind of feed
- Compound feed: the recipe for your exact group of animals, protein content, manufacturer, date of manufacture.
- Grain (maize, barley, wheat): moisture, impurities, crop year, no mould.
- Hay: this year's or not, the kind of grass, colour and smell; lucerne (alfalfa) and mixed grass differ in nutrition. Bales must be dry.
- Silage and haylage: storage conditions, no mould.
- Premixes and supplements: which animal they are for and the dose to use.
What to put in your request
- kind of feed — compound feed, grain, hay, straw, pulp, oilcake, bran;
- for whom — broiler starter, laying hens, pigs, cattle, rabbits;
- quantity — kilograms, tonnes, bags or bales;
- delivery town or village, or self-pickup;
- packing — 25 or 50 kg bags, bulk bags, loose, small or large bales, rolls;
- quality — crop year, moisture, type of grass, protein;
- manufacturer, if it matters;
- budget per kilogram or in total.
Example: “I need 200 kg of broiler starter feed in 25 kg bags, a branded product or equal, and 20 small bales of this year's lucerne hay. Near Kuala Lumpur, delivery to the village. Budget up to RM 1.63 per kg for the compound feed.”
How to compare offers
Check the recipe and protein, not just the name. Ask for a certificate or test report, the production date and the storage conditions. For hay, ask for photos of the bales and when it was cut. Distance affects the price a lot: with large volumes delivery can be a noticeable share, so compare the total with delivery.
If you are buying for the season, plan storage: a dry room, pallets, protection from rats and mice.
How BlaBlaPrice works for buying feed
You describe your need once on BlaBlaPrice, and suppliers and farms reply in the chat: what exactly, at what price, in what packing and with what delivery. The platform shows the best-value offer first, and sellers can see their place and improve their terms. Contacts stay hidden until you choose a supplier. Read more: how it works.
For the animals themselves there is the “Farm animals” section, and for small accessories “Pet supplies”.
