A CVT for the Outlander: buy or repair?

A CVT is one of the costliest units people look for on the Outlander XL and similar models. Before you buy a used one, make sure the fault is really in the gearbox and not in the electronics or the cooling. A diagnosis costs less than a wrong purchase. If a mechanic has confirmed that the CVT must be replaced, go ahead and search.

In the request give the model, year, engine size and VIN. For a CVT the gearbox code has to match yours.

What to ask the seller

Ask whether the gearbox came from a car that was running, and what mileage the donor had. Were there vibrations, jerks or error codes? What does the oil look like? Is the cooling radiator included, and was it flushed? A good breaker does not hide this and adds photos or a video. Agree on a warranty for testing, and on who pays for return shipping if the gearbox turns out not to work.

For the Outlander XL the drive also matters: front-wheel or all-wheel. The rear differential and even the mounts depend on it, so write it in the request, especially if you are looking for more than one part.

CVTs do not like overheating, so the oil is usually changed and the cooling radiator cleaned along with the unit. A strong point for an offer is a confirmed service history of the donor or a video of it running. Ask about the fitting cost in advance as well, because it depends on the workshop.

What to put in your request

  • Model — for example, Mitsubishi Outlander XL;
  • Part — CVT, engine, bumper and so on;
  • Year;
  • Engine — for example, 2.4 petrol;
  • Side — for parts that come in pairs;
  • Colour — for body parts;
  • Condition — working, with a warranty on testing;
  • VIN;
  • Delivery city and budget.

Example: “Mitsubishi Outlander XL, 2009, 2.4 petrol, all-wheel drive. I need a CVT, working, with a warranty on testing, preferably with the donor’s mileage. I will give the VIN. Courier delivery to Ipoh. Budget up to RM 2,400.”

Why BlaBlaPrice helps here

Not every breaker has CVTs, so writing to them one by one takes long. Post one request on BlaBlaPrice: those who have the right gearbox reply with a price, photos and terms. The platform shows the best-value offer first, with seller reviews beside it. Sellers can see their place and may improve the price or the warranty. Contacts are opened only to the one you choose. Read more on the “How it works” page.

You will find other brands in the car breakers section.

Questions and answers

How do I know the CVT needs replacing?

A mechanic should confirm it after a diagnosis. Signs can be jerks, vibrations and error codes, but other units can cause them too.

Can I fit a CVT from another Mitsubishi?

Only if the gearbox code and the mounts match. Checking against the VIN or the part number confirms it.

What warranty can I get on a CVT?

The seller usually gives a warranty on testing after fitting. Agree the terms and the period in the chat before paying.

What else should I buy with the CVT?

Fresh oil and a filter, and a cooling radiator if needed. Ask your mechanic what exactly is required.
