How to choose and buy thermal underwear: merino, synthetic, sets
Thermals do not warm you by themselves, they move moisture away
Their job is to keep your skin dry: moisture goes outwards instead of staying under your clothes. So the choice depends on how much you move. For skiing or running you need thin, quick-drying wear, and for fishing, hunting or long waits in the cold you need a denser kind.
Merino wool is warm, does not hold odours and feels good on the skin, but it costs more and needs gentler washing. Polypropylene and polyester move moisture away easily and dry fast, so they are often chosen for active sports. Cotton does not wick moisture, so it is no good for cold weather and movement.
What to put in your request
- Purpose — everyday winter wear in cold regions, skiing, running, trekking in the hills, outdoor work.
- What exactly — a full set, just the top or just the leggings.
- Material — merino wool, polypropylene, synthetic, fleece lining.
- Warmth level — light, medium, dense, or an approximate temperature, for example down to −10 °C.
- Size — S/M/L or by measurements; thermals should fit snugly, not loosely.
- Brand and colour, if you have preferences.
- Budget, if you want to state it.
Example: “I need a women's thermal set (top and leggings) in merino wool, medium weight, for skiing in the mountains, size M, black. Delivery to George Town, budget up to RM 240.”
How BlaBlaPrice helps
Instead of checking the fabric and sizes on different sites, you write one request. Sellers reply in the chat with the fabric, weight, price and delivery terms. BlaBlaPrice shows the best-value offer first, and sellers, who can see where they stand among the others, compete for your request. Contacts stay hidden, and it is free for buyers. Learn more on the “How it works” page.
How to compare offers
Compare by fabric and weight, not by the word “winter”. Ask how much wool a “wool” model really has, because it is often a blend with synthetics. Check whether the set is sold together or the top and bottoms separately. Look for flat seams and a sleeve length that keeps the cuffs from riding up.
- For ordinary cold, light or medium weight under your outer clothes is enough.
- For hard frost and sitting still, people take denser models, and for active sports, the opposite, thin ones.
- It is best to wash such clothing at the temperature on the label and without fabric softener, or the fabric will wick moisture worse.
A common mistake is to buy a big size “to grow into” or a cotton “thermal”. Another is to wear it over regular underwear, when it should sit against the skin.
If you need everyday underwear as well, look at knickers and lingerie sets.
