Trip computer or OBD scanner: how to choose for your car
How a scanner differs from a trip computer
An OBD scanner is a diagnostic device that reads the fault codes of the engine control unit (ECU), clears them and shows live data: temperature, revs, voltage. A trip computer stays in the cabin all the time and shows fuel use, range, temperatures and faults. A cheap Bluetooth adapter works through an app on your phone, while a dedicated display is more convenient behind the wheel. Separate gauges (boost pressure, oil temperature, a clock) connect to their own sensors, not to the diagnostic socket.
Connection: the most important part
Most cars made after the early 2000s use the OBD2 standard, but older cars and some makes have their own protocols. For an older car such as a 2008 Suzuki Swift, ask whether the computer works with its diagnostic protocol. Check that your engine is supported: a 1.2 petrol and a 1.5 diesel may send different sets of data. Some models fit into a factory slot, and then you need a model that matches your car’s panel exactly.
Cheap clones of the ELM327 adapter often work unstably. Ask about the chip version and whether they have tested it on your make.
What to put in your request
- What you need — trip computer, scanner, display, boost or oil gauge.
- Car model and year — for example, Suzuki Swift, 2008.
- Engine — size and fuel, for example 1.2 petrol.
- Connection — OBD2, an older protocol, factory slot, separate sensors.
- Functions — fuel use, ECU faults, temperatures, voltage.
- Device model — if you have already chosen one.
- Fitting — needed or not.
- Delivery and budget.
Example: “I need a trip computer for a 2008 Suzuki Swift, 1.2 petrol engine, connected through the diagnostic socket, that shows fuel use and ECU faults. Fitting preferred. Courier delivery to Kuala Lumpur, budget up to RM 200.”
How to compare
Ask for the list of supported makes and protocols, and confirmation that the device works with your engine. Ask about firmware updates, the warranty and menu languages. If you need fitting, find out whether it is in the price and where it is done.
How BlaBlaPrice helps
You create a request naming your car, and sellers reply in the chat: which model will fit, the price, availability, whether fitting is offered. The site shows the offer with the best value first, with reviews next to it. Your phone stays hidden until you choose a seller. More on the “How it works” page.
