Wedding suit for the groom: buy, have it tailored or rent

Three ways: ready-made, tailored, rented

You can buy a wedding suit ready-made (new or second-hand), have one made to measure, or rent one. Ready-made is the fastest, but it will probably need alterations. Tailoring gives a perfect fit, but takes a few weeks and several fittings. Renting makes sense when you need the suit only once, though the choice of models is limited.

When you choose, count the time: if the wedding is less than a month away, it's worth ordering tailoring at once and stating the date in your request.

What affects the choice

A two-piece or a three-piece with a waistcoat is the classic for cooler months. For summer and outdoor weddings a lighter fabric such as linen or a wool and linen blend is better, with a lighter shade. Velvet looks festive but is warm. A tuxedo or tailcoat is appropriate only for the matching formality of the evening.

Look at the cut: slim or classic, the length of the jacket, the width of the trouser legs. State your height and chest measurement, because the same size sits differently in different brands.

What to put in your request

  • type of suit – two-piece, three-piece, tuxedo, tailcoat, or a separate waistcoat or shirt;
  • format – ready-made, tailored, rental;
  • size – 40 or 42, height, chest and waist measurements;
  • colour – navy, charcoal, beige;
  • fabric – wool, linen blend, velvet;
  • brand, if you have a preferred one;
  • condition – new or second-hand;
  • wedding date and city for fittings;
  • budget, if you want to state it.

Example: “I need a new three-piece suit for a wedding on 12 December, navy wool, size 40, height 182 cm. Slim cut, the sleeves need altering. City George Town, budget up to RM 1,200.”

How to compare offers

Compare like with like: the price of a suit may or may not include a shirt, a tie or alterations. For tailoring, ask about the lining, the number of fittings, the timeline and what happens if the finished suit turns out not to fit. For rentals, ask about the deposit, the return date and who pays for dry cleaning.

For second-hand suits, ask for photos of the lining and underarms, and ask whether the fastenings were replaced and whether it was dry-cleaned.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

You describe what you need once, and sellers and tailors answer in the chat: what they offer, the price or what it depends on, timing, photos. BlaBlaPrice shows the offer that gives the best value first, and reviews of the seller are next to each one. Sellers see their place among the others and often improve their terms. Contacts are not visible until you choose a seller. It is all explained on the “How it works” page, and you can create a request here.

Questions and answers

Is it better to buy a wedding suit or rent one?

If you need the suit only once, renting is often cheaper. If you plan to wear it again, a ready-made or tailored suit is more practical.

How far ahead should I order tailoring?

Better a few weeks ahead, because measurements and fittings are needed. State the wedding date in your request, and tailors will tell you whether they can make it in time.

Which colour of suit should I choose?

Navy, charcoal and black are the classics, and in summer lighter shades are popular. Go by the season, the time of day and the formality of the celebration.

Are alterations included in the price?

It varies. Ask the seller in advance and compare offers together with the alterations.
