Bathroom furniture: vanity unit, tall cabinet, mirror, how to choose

In a bathroom the main enemy is moisture

Bathroom furniture has to put up with steam and splashes. Ordinary particle board swells at the cut edges, so look for moisture-resistant boards, edging sealed with no gaps, painted MDF, PVC or solid wood with a suitable finish. Check that the fronts are protected on all sides, especially the bottom, where water collects. The hardware should be stainless steel or coated so that it does not rust, which is a real concern in humid coastal cities.

Wall-hung or floor-standing

A wall-hung vanity unit makes the space look bigger and makes floor cleaning easier, but it needs a strong wall: on a partition wall you need the right fixings. A floor-standing unit is more stable, sometimes roomier, and does not load the wall. Also allow for the position of the trap and pipes, because drawers are often cut out around the trap.

How it works with BlaBlaPrice

Bathroom furniture is sold by makers, sanitaryware showrooms and online shops, and prices and lead times differ. You write one request, and sellers reply in the chat: model, sizes, material, price, delivery and fitting. They can see where their offer stands and can improve it. It is free for the buyer, and only the one you choose sees your contacts. Read about the idea on the How it works page.

What to put in your request

  • What exactly — vanity unit, tall cabinet, wall cabinet, mirror cabinet, a set.
  • Sizes — width (60 or 80 cm), height and depth.
  • Wall-hung or floor-standing.
  • Basin — included or not, countertop or built-in.
  • Material — moisture-resistant MDF, particle board, PVC, solid wood.
  • Colour and style.
  • Delivery including carrying up to your floor.
  • Fitting and connection of the basin and tap.
  • City and budget.

Example: “I need a new wall-hung vanity unit 80 cm wide, moisture-resistant MDF, matt white, with a countertop basin. Delivery with carrying up to the floor, and fitting with connection. Karachi. Budget up to Rs 83,000.”

What to look at when comparing

Check exactly what is in the price: basin, tap, trap, mirror, lighting. Often a "unit" and a "unit with basin" differ by a large amount, and you can see it only in the description. Ask what the frame is made of and how the edges are finished. For wall-hung models, ask what load the fixings can take.

Measure the space and where the pipes are: sometimes you need a unit with a cut-out or an offset. Check which way the doors open and whether they will hit the bathroom door or the washing machine. Ask whether the maker does the fitting and connection themselves, and about the warranty.

Common mistakes

  • Buying ordinary particle board with no protection from moisture.
  • Not allowing for depth for the washing machine or the trap.
  • Not checking the wall before hanging furniture on it.
  • Not counting carrying up and assembly as separate costs.

If you are renovating the whole flat, also look at sliding wardrobes and walk-in closets and bedroom furniture.

Questions and answers

Which material is best for bathroom furniture?

Moisture-resistant boards, MDF with good paint, PVC or solid wood with a protective finish. Ask how the edges are protected.

Is the unit fitted together with delivery?

Often yes, but not always. Say in your request that you need fitting and connection, and sellers will set out the terms.

Will a wall-hung unit carry a basin?

Yes, if the wall is strong and the fixings are chosen correctly. On a partition wall, ask for advice on fitting.

Do all sellers see my number?

No, contacts are hidden. Only the seller you choose gets them.
