Forestry machinery: forwarder, harvester, skidder — get offers

Define the job first, then the machine

Forestry machinery means different machines for different stages. A harvester fells trees, strips the branches and cuts the trunks to length. A forwarder carries the cut logs from the felling area to the road. A skidder drags whole stems to a landing, and a timber truck with a loader crane takes the timber on to the yard. So start with the question: what exactly needs doing, and in what volume.

If there is not much work, buying a machine does not always make sense. You can hire a machine with an operator for the period you need, and simply write in your request that you are looking for a service.

What affects the price most

  • Class and maker: modern harvesters and forwarders of well-known brands, such as Ponsse or John Deere, and older machines from the used market are very different sums.
  • Engine hours and the state of the hydraulics: for forestry machines this matters more than the year. The crane, rotator and hydraulic pumps wear fastest.
  • Load capacity and wheel layout: 6×6 and 8×8 behave differently on slopes and in marsh.
  • Equipment: a harvester head, grapples, a winch or spare blades often change the total more than the brand.
  • Delivery: oversized machines go on a trailer, a transport permit is often needed, so the price depends on the distance.

What to put in your request

Forestry machines vary a lot, so without details the offers cannot be compared:

  • type of machine — harvester, forwarder, skidder, timber truck with a crane;
  • buy or hire — and whether you need an operator;
  • model — a specific one, or “something like a Ponsse Buffalo”;
  • load capacity — for example 12 tonnes;
  • year and engine hours — the most you would accept;
  • scope of work — how many cubic metres and what terrain;
  • area where the machine will work;
  • hire period and budget, if you want to state it.

Example: “I need a used forwarder with a capacity of about 12 tonnes, not older than 2008, up to 15,000 engine hours. The work is in a hilly forest area. I want to buy, budget up to Rs 26,000,000, and I need photos of the crane unit and a record of the engine hours.”

How to compare offers

Ask every seller for the same things: photos or a video of the machine working, the engine-hour reading and the age of the key units. Ask whether there is a service history, whether the hydraulic hoses have been replaced, and what state the tyres or tracks are in. For hire, clarify who pays for fuel, who delivers the machine and what happens if it breaks down.

A race to the cheapest is dangerous here: a price that is too low often means a used-up machine. Look at what is included and on what terms, not only at the sum.

What BlaBlaPrice does

You do not hunt for machinery owners through listings, you write one request. It is checked, and you see which details sellers still lack. Then sellers and renters of heavy equipment reply, and the system compares the offers and shows the best one first, judged on what is offered. Each seller sees their place among the others, so they often improve their terms. Your phone is hidden, and it is free for the buyer.

If you need to unload at a yard instead of the forest, look at forklifts and loaders. For carrying logs on the road, tipper trucks sometimes work, and a general overview of machinery is in the “Heavy equipment” section.

Questions and answers

How is a forwarder different from a harvester?

A harvester fells trees and cuts them into logs at once; a forwarder collects the finished logs and takes them to the road. They usually work as a pair.

What should I look at in used forestry machinery?

Engine hours, the state of the hydraulics, the crane unit and the undercarriage, and the papers. Ask for photos and a video of the machine working.

Can I hire a machine with an operator?

Yes, write “hire with an operator”, the volume of work in cubic metres and the area in your request. Owners will state the rate per hour or shift and their terms.

Does the buyer pay for BlaBlaPrice?

No, it is free for buyers. A seller pays a small fee only when you choose them.
