How to buy ice skates at a good price: figure, hockey, adjustable for kids
The type of skate depends on how you skate
Figure skates have a long blade with a toe pick and a stiff boot that supports the ankle. Hockey skates are shorter, with a curved blade for manoeuvring. Recreational skates are softer and easier for beginners, and speed skates have a long straight blade. Children's adjustable skates change size and suit fast-growing kids. State in your request what the skates are for, and don't mix up the type with the brand.
Size and fit
It is better to choose skates by insole length in centimetres, not just by the size number. Hockey skates often run a size or half a size smaller than ordinary shoes, while figure skates usually match the shoe size. For adjustable ones give the range, for example 34–37. Don't buy “to grow into” a size that is too big: the foot wobbles in them and skating becomes unsafe.
The blade and its condition
A blade needs sharpening. A new blade is often sold already sharpened; with used skates ask when they were sharpened and how much metal is left. Rust, dents and chips on the blade are a reason to walk away or to ask for a lower price. On figure skates the blade can be replaced separately, so it doesn't always rule out the model.
What to put in your request
- type of skates — figure, hockey, recreational, speed, adjustable for children;
- size — the number or insole length, the range for adjustable ones;
- model, for example Bauer Supreme;
- level — beginner, club, amateur;
- age — for a child or an adult;
- condition — new or used, blade sharpened;
- budget and delivery city.
Example: “I need figure skates for a girl of 7, size 32, new or used in good condition, blade sharpened. For club lessons. Courier delivery to Lahore, budget up to Rs 19,000.”
How to compare and buy
On BlaBlaPrice you write one request and sellers reply in the chat with price, sizes in stock and delivery. The platform shows first the offer that is best value in substance, and reviews are visible next to the seller. Sellers can see their place among the others, so they compete on terms. Your phone number stays hidden until you choose a seller. Have the blade sharpened by a specialist, not at home: the angle decides how the skate glides.
The season is busiest in autumn, so sizes sell out quickly: agree in advance. Compare skates by type, size and the state of the blade, not just the price. Ask whether you can exchange them if the size is wrong. For skating in summer look at roller skates, and for the winter months also skis and snowboards. The service is described in more detail on the “How it works” page.
