Reptiles: how to choose and buy a gecko, snake or tortoise
Conditions first, then the animal
A reptile will not stay healthy without a proper terrarium. It needs warm and cool zones, a UV lamp (for many species), humidity suited to the species, hiding places and the right substrate. The cost of equipment often reaches or exceeds the price of the animal itself, so work it out in advance. It is normal practice to ask the seller for a costing of the whole set-up.
Also check how long the species lives and how big it will grow. A small juvenile boa or tortoise can become much bigger than you expected.
What to choose as a beginner
- Leopard gecko: small, calm, undemanding, needs a heat source and live feeder insects.
- Bearded dragon: active and tame, but needs a roomy terrarium, UV light and fresh greens.
- Corn snake: does well in captivity and eats mice; suits those who are not afraid of snakes.
- Tortoises (land and water): live for decades, so this is a responsibility for many years.
- Chameleons are demanding about humidity and temperature, and are better taken after you have some experience.
Feeding and care
Geckos and bearded dragons eat live insects (crickets, mealworms, roaches) with calcium supplements, and dragons also eat vegetables and greens. Snakes eat mice, which are bought frozen and thawed before feeding. Decide in advance where you will get the food and whether you are ready to store it. Measure the temperature in the terrarium with a thermometer, not by eye.
What to put in your request
- species — leopard gecko, bearded dragon, corn snake, tortoise, chameleon;
- morph, if it matters, for example Tangerine;
- age — juvenile or adult;
- sex, if known;
- terrarium — whether you need one, lamps and heating;
- papers — proof of captive breeding, CITES;
- city for pickup or delivery;
- budget.
Example: “I am looking for a leopard gecko, female, Tangerine morph, juvenile of 3 months, captive-bred. I need a terrarium with lamps and heating. Karachi, self-pickup. Budget up to Rs 28,000.”
How to compare offers
Check whether the price includes the terrarium, lamps, heating, decor and food for the first period. Look at the condition: the animal should be plump and active, with clear eyes and no leftover shed on the toes or tail. Ask how it eats, whether it ate recently and when it last shed. Wild-caught reptiles adapt worse, so prefer captive-bred animals.
For species listed under CITES, papers are needed, and an honest seller will provide them. Do not send money without confirmation that the animal is available.
