Steering rack repair: rebuild, exchange or a new rack
First find out which rack you have
Steering racks come with hydraulic power steering, with electric power steering (EPS) and fully mechanical. With hydraulic ones, typical problems are leaking seals, knocking bushes and a worn shaft. With electric racks, usually the module or the torque sensor fails, while the mechanical part lasts longer. The type decides which mechanic will take the job and how long you will have to wait.
The symptoms also give hints: a knock over bumps is often linked to bushes or tie rods, while a wet rack and a falling fluid level in the reservoir point to the seals.
What to put in your request
- type of steering — hydraulic, electric (on the rack or on the column) or mechanical;
- make, model, year and engine — for example Ford EcoSport, 2015;
- symptoms — knocks, leaks, heavy turning, play, vibration in the steering wheel;
- what to do — a rebuild with new seals, replacing bushes, exchange for a reconditioned rack, repair of the electric module or pump;
- rack or parts — your own, an exchange unit, a new one;
- city, timing and budget.
Example: “Ford EcoSport, 2015, hydraulic power steering. The rack leaks and knocks on the left over bumps. I need a rebuild with new seals and bushes, or an exchange for a reconditioned one. Rawalpindi, in 2 days, budget up to Rs 33,000.”
Rebuild or exchange: which to choose
A rebuild means the rack is removed, taken apart, the worn parts are replaced and it is fitted back. It may be cheaper if only the seals are worn. An exchange means you hand over your rack and get a reconditioned one, so the car stands idle for less time. A new rack is the most expensive, but may be justified if the housing or the shaft is damaged.
The offer should state clearly which option it is and what exactly is replaced. A plain “rack repair” with no detail is hard to compare.
How it works through BlaBlaPrice
You describe the car and the symptom in one request, and mechanics reply in the chat: what they propose, for how much, for how many days they keep the car, what the warranty is. The site shows the best offer by substance first, with reviews of the mechanic next to it. Mechanics see their place among the others and improve their terms. Your number is hidden until you choose a provider.
Common mistakes
- driving with a leak until the fluid runs out: the pump can fail, and the repair will cost more;
- not checking the tie rods, ends and bushes, which can knock too;
- not bleeding the system after the repair or not filling in the right fluid;
- not having wheel alignment done after the replacement or rebuild.
If the knock may come from the suspension, also look at suspension and brake repair. To check the electric power steering, car computer diagnostics will help. Everything is in the section “Car & motorcycle servicing”.
