How to hire a teacher or lecturer: subject, classes, hours
Subject, classes and hours: this is what a vacancy is made of
A school, junior college, private school or coaching centre is not looking for just “a teacher”. A maths teacher for classes 5–9 and a lecturer for college students have different requirements for qualifications, methods and way of working. So first decide on the subject, the age of the students and the number of hours.
The academic year has its own pattern: demand peaks in the summer before the new session and again in January. If you have a deadline, write it early so the candidate has time to arrange their release from the previous job.
Besides the subject, think about extra duties: form tutor responsibilities, a club, checking notebooks, competition coaching. Teachers count not only hours at the board but also preparation and marking, so be honest about the real workload. Mention separately whether there is a classroom, a projector and methodological support.
What to include in the vacancy
- Subject — maths, a language, physics, primary classes;
- Salary — monthly rate, pay per hour, extra for form tutor duties;
- Work location — city, school, branch;
- Schedule and workload — number of hours a week;
- Classes — which ones, for example 5–9;
- Employment terms — on payroll, with a written contract;
- Experience — years of teaching;
- Qualification — B.Ed or other teaching qualification, subject degree.
Example: “Karachi. A school is looking for a maths teacher for classes 5–9. Workload 18 hours a week, a teaching qualification, at least 3 years' experience. Salary Rs 83,000 a month, a written contract. Form tutor duties possible.”
How to search on BlaBlaPrice
Create a request on the home page in your own words. The site checks it and suggests what else to add. Teachers and lecturers from your area reply in the chat: they tell you about their experience, methods and expectations. You compare and choose, and contacts are opened only to the one you choose. It is all described on the page “How it works”.
What to check in a candidate
Ask for a demo lesson or ask how they approach difficult students. Ask which programmes and textbooks they use and whether they have taught online. References from colleagues and principals at previous schools are especially valuable.
Discuss in advance the timetable, planning work, reporting and payment for substitute classes. For a school, qualification documents and a medical check matter too, so check that they are available before the start date.
Also discuss cover for the teacher's sick days and pay for extra hours, to avoid misunderstandings.
