Tow bar for a car: how to buy it with fitting and not overpay
A tow bar is chosen for the car, not the other way round
There are almost no universal tow bars: each is made for a particular model, body and even generation. So the first thing a seller will need is the make, model and year, and better still the VIN or body code. Without this the offers will be only approximate.
Types of tow bars
- Fixed (flange) — the simplest and cheapest, but you can’t remove the ball, and it may get in the way when parking.
- Detachable — the ball comes off when needed, looks neater, usually costs more.
- Swan neck — a curved ball mount; common for cars with a low bumper.
- Welded ball — rarer, for special jobs.
Ask also about the permitted load: the maximum trailer weight and the vertical load on the ball are limited both by the car’s papers and by the design of the tow bar itself.
Electrics: socket and wiring
A trailer can’t travel without working lights. The socket is 7-pin (simpler, for a light trailer) or 13-pin (for a caravan or a trailer with extra functions). Modern cars often also need a smart module so the on-board system doesn’t show errors. Ask whether they offer a “plug and play” harness that fits without cutting the factory wiring.
What to put in your request
- Car model and year or body code;
- Tow bar type — detachable, fixed, swan neck;
- Electrics — 7-pin, 13-pin, smart module;
- Fitting — fitting and wiring needed, or only the tow bar;
- Load — what weight you will tow;
- Maker, if you have a preference;
- City and budget, including whether the sum covers fitting.
Example: “Volkswagen Tiguan, 2019, I need a detachable tow bar with 13-pin electrics and a smart module, for a trailer up to 2000 kg. With fitting and wiring in Islamabad. Budget up to Rs 83,000 including fitting.”
How to compare offers
The most common trap is to compare only the price of the tow bar, and then the fitting and electrics turn out to be extra. Ask for a quote “complete”: tow bar, socket, wiring, fitting. Ask about the maker: well-known brands usually come with certificates, while no-name ones may not meet the standards. Ask about papers and a warranty on the work.
Also check whether the tow bar has to be registered in the vehicle papers and who does it: these rules depend on the current regulations, so it is best to confirm with the fitter.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You describe the car and your wishes in one request, and sellers and workshops reply in the chat with prices and timing. They see how competitive their offer is and can improve their terms. Your phone isn’t sent to everyone. More on the page about how the service works.
For a load together with a tow bar you may also need roof racks.
