Vegetable and Flower Seedlings: How to Order Healthy Plants on Time
Seedlings are all about timing
Seedlings don't live long: ones that outgrow their tray lose strength, and ones that dry out or get chilled may not take. So first decide exactly when you will plant, and agree a pick-up date. Tomatoes and chillies for a greenhouse and for open ground have different timings, and the seller needs to know where they will go.
For open ground, people take hardened-off seedlings; for a greenhouse, ones already grown in similar conditions. A separate category is grafted seedlings: they cost more, but resist root diseases better.
What to put in your request
- crop — tomatoes, chillies, cabbage, cucumbers, strawberries, flowers such as petunias;
- variety — a name or traits: cherry, early, tall;
- quantity — pieces, trays or crates;
- age and size — how many days, height, pot or tray, grafted or not;
- where to plant — open ground, greenhouse, flower bed, balcony;
- when you need them — the date or planting period;
- city — pickup or delivery;
- budget, for example per plant.
Example: “I need 100 tomato seedlings of a beefsteak variety in trays, about 45 days old, for open ground. To collect in early June, Karachi. Budget up to Rs 280 per plant.”
How to judge the quality of seedlings
Healthy seedlings have a sturdy stem, green leaves without spots, and are not stretched toward the light. The roots in the tray should hold a ball of soil, but not be tangled into a tight knot. Ask the seller for a photo of the very batch you will be sold, and ask how they were grown and whether they were treated against pests.
When comparing offers, check the age of the plants and the tray volume: 50 plants in large pots and 50 in cramped trays are different products. Ask whether the variety is confirmed (especially for new hybrids), and whether you can choose the plants when you collect them.
How searching works on BlaBlaPrice
Searching for seedlings around markets and listings is exhausting: different varieties, and no way to know who has what you need. On BlaBlaPrice you describe your need once, and growers and nurseries reply in a chat: what they have, when, and for how much. They can see where their offer ranks, so they compete for your request. The system puts the best-value offer first, with seller reviews next to it. Contacts stay hidden and are opened only to the seller you choose. See the “How it works” page.
Common mistakes
People order at the peak of the season, when demand is highest, and end up without the variety they want, so book ahead. They buy seedlings “just in case” and then the plants outgrow their trays. They ignore the weather: planting out before the right time is risky. Before planting, prepare the soil and fertilisers, and if you would rather grow your own, look at seeds.
