Bicycle repair and servicing: how to find a mechanic
Seasonal service or a specific fault
Bicycle work is usually of two kinds. The first is routine servicing: cleaning and lubricating the drivetrain, adjusting the gears and brakes, and checking tyre pressure and condition, before or after the season. The second is fixing a particular problem: a wobbling wheel, gears that will not shift, brakes that squeal or do not hold, a puncture, play in the bottom bracket or headset.
The difference matters because your request should show what you expect: an inspection and adjustment, or replacement of parts.
What to put in your request
- type of bicycle — mountain, road, gravel, city, kids’, BMX;
- the model — for example, Trek Marlin 7;
- what needs doing — full service, gear adjustment, brakes, wheel truing, replacing a tube;
- components — brake type (hydraulic, mechanical), groupset, suspension fork;
- whose parts — yours, or the mechanic buys them;
- home visit or pickup — you want the mechanic to come to you, or you will bring the bike;
- area, time and budget.
Example: “Trek Marlin 7 mountain bike with Shimano hydraulic brakes. The gears shift poorly and the brakes hum. I need a check-up, adjustment and, if needed, new brake pads (I have the pads). Johannesburg, preferably before the weekend, budget up to R 160.”
What affects the repair price
- Brake type: bleeding hydraulics is harder than adjusting cables.
- Component level: parts on expensive groupsets cost more, and forks and shock absorbers need special servicing.
- Condition of the bike: after the rainy season or long storage it often needs a deep clean and new cables.
- Home visit: a mechanic coming to your home may charge extra.
How to compare offers
Ask for a breakdown of what is included: is the diagnosis free, is the price for labour only without parts, and what warranty comes with the work. A gap between two mechanics may not be “greed”. One may be offering a simple adjustment and the other a part replacement.
Ask about experience with your kind of bike. Electric bicycles, carbon frames and complex suspension need separate skills. Be ready for some parts having to be ordered, which can take a few days.
A common mistake is to put off repairing brakes or steering “for a bit longer”. This is a safety issue. It also helps the mechanic to price the job if you say how you ride: in the city, on trails or on long routes.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You write a request once, and mechanics reply in the chat with a price or a guide figure, time and whether they can visit. The request is checked before it is shown, and you are told which details are missing. Mechanics can see where they stand among the others, so they often improve their terms, and you see reviews next to each offer. Contacts go only to the one you choose. Details are on the “How it works” page.
For electric scooters and e-bikes with batteries there is a separate category: electric vehicle repair.
