How to Buy a Fan for Home or Office: Quiet, with Remote, Pedestal
Where will it work?
You choose a fan for the place. For a bedroom the main things are quiet running and a night mode. For an office, a small size and compact shape matter, and for a big room or a high-ceilinged hall, a powerful pedestal model. Exhaust fans for a bathroom or kitchen are a different class altogether: they are built into a wall or a duct, and chosen by diameter and airflow.
Types of fans
- Pedestal (on a stand) covers a large area and has adjustable height.
- Table fan is compact and good for a desk.
- Tower (column) is quieter and takes less space, but the airflow is softer.
- Ceiling and wall fans save floor space.
- Bladeless is safer for children and usually costs more.
Noise and power
Noise is measured in decibels: for sleeping, aim for around 30 dB or lower, but makers often quote these figures at minimum speed. Ask the seller to state the noise at medium speed. Blade diameter (for example 40 cm) and power in watts affect the airflow, but a large model at low speed is often quieter than a small one at maximum.

How to compare offers
Compare features: remote, timer, oscillation and the number of speeds may be on a pricier model and missing on a cheaper one. Ask about cable length, the warranty, and whether you can return it if the noise doesn't suit you. Don't forget the season: in the heat fans sell out, and offers in winter may be better.
