Irrigation System for Your Plot: Drip Irrigation, Hoses, Automation

Start with the water, not the kit

The key question for watering is where the water comes from and at what pressure. A well, a borewell, a tank or the mains: each source suits different solutions. Drip irrigation from a gravity-fed tank works at low pressure, while sprinklers and automatic systems need a pump or a steady supply line.

So before you buy, decide what you will water: vegetable beds, rows of shrubs, trees, a lawn or a greenhouse. Each has its own type: tape or tube with drippers, micro-sprayers, sprinklers.

What to put in your request

  • what exactly — drip irrigation kit, sprinklers, automatic system, hose, reel, timer, pump;
  • area to water — in square metres or acres, or the number of beds and rows;
  • length and diameter — length of hose or main line, diameter 1/2" or 3/4", number of layers, spacing between drippers;
  • water source — well, borewell, mains, tank, and whether you have a pump;
  • automation — whether you need a timer, a controller, a rain sensor or phone control;
  • installation — parts only, or design and installation too;
  • brand, if you have a preference;
  • city and budget.

Example: “I need drip irrigation for a greenhouse and beds on a 1-acre plot, water from a borewell with a pump, a 50 m line, 3/4" diameter, with a timer. Near Johannesburg, no installation. Budget up to R 2,300.”

How to compare offers

The same hose length doesn't mean the same quality. Look at the number of layers and the reinforcement: thin hoses kink and crack in the sun. For drip tape, the wall thickness, the spacing between drippers and the water flow per dripper matter. The filter and fittings are often sold separately, so check what is in the kit, because without them the system clogs quickly.

For automation, find out whether the control unit, valves and sensors work together and whether there is a warranty. If you need installation, ask the seller to describe the steps: design, pipes, connection to the water source.

What BlaBlaPrice gives you

An irrigation set is made of dozens of small parts, and collecting them from several shops is not easy. So write one request: sellers reply in a chat with the kit, price, terms and delivery. They can see where their offer ranks and improve their terms to win. BlaBlaPrice shows the best-value offer first, with seller reviews next to each one. Your phone number is not exposed; only the seller you choose sees your contacts. Read more on the “How it works” page.

Common mistakes

People buy a kit without checking the pressure: on a long line, the drippers at the far end give less water. They skip the filter, especially with well water. They buy a hose “by eye” and then have to buy connectors. They also forget about winter in the hills and colder regions: the system must be drained so that water doesn't burst the pipes.

Along with irrigation, people often buy greenhouses and polytunnels, garden tools or soil for beds.

Questions and answers

Which is better: drip irrigation or sprinklers?

Drip irrigation brings water to the roots and saves it, which is good for beds and shrubs. Sprinklers are handy for a lawn.

How do I work out the length of hose or tape?

Measure from the tap to the farthest point and add a margin. Write the size of your plot in the request, and sellers will help with the calculation.

Can I get irrigation with installation?

Yes, say so in your request. Sellers will tell you whether installation is in the price and how long it will take.

Do I need a filter for drip irrigation?

Yes, especially with well or borewell water. Without a filter the drippers clog quickly.
