Women's slips for dresses and home wear: how to choose and buy well

A slip under a dress or for sleeping

A slip is a light strappy garment, and it comes in two kinds. One is worn under a dress or skirt: it stops the fabric from being see-through, keeps it from clinging to your legs and adds a little warmth. The other is for home or night, with lace on the bust and hem. The use decides both the length and the fabric.

For a dress, the slip should be 3-5 cm shorter than the hem, or it will show. So measure the dress you are buying it for first.

The fabric decides how it wears

Natural silk feels lovely and breathes, but it is costly and needs careful washing. Satin and viscose look similar and cost less, though viscose can build up static. Microfibre and jersey suit close-fitting dresses because they glide over the body. Lace looks beautiful on home slips, but under a dress its outline can sometimes show through.

If the fabric holds static, it will cling under your dress. Ask the seller whether it has an anti-static finish, or choose silk or viscose blended with cotton.

What to put in your request

  • type — under a dress, night slip, lace slip;
  • material — silk, satin, viscose, lace;
  • length — mini, knee-length, midi, or the length in cm;
  • size — S/M/L, number size or measurements;
  • colour — powder pink, black, ivory;
  • brand, if you have a preferred one;
  • quantity — one or several;
  • budget, if you want to state it.

Example: “I need a slip to wear under a summer dress, natural silk or satin, knee-length, powder pink, size M. New, delivery to Pretoria. Budget up to R 300.”

How to compare offers

The difference in price mostly comes from the fabric blend. Ask whether it is real silk or an imitation, and what percentage is viscose or synthetic. Ask for the garment length in centimetres from shoulder to hem, because “midi” means different things to different makers.

For a white or light dress, pick a colour close to your skin tone. A pure white slip can show through thin fabric.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

You describe the slip once, and sellers reply in the chat with what they offer, the price, delivery terms and photos. BlaBlaPrice shows the best-value offer first, with seller reviews beside each one. Sellers can see where they stand, so they often improve their terms. Contacts stay hidden until you choose a seller. Details are on the “How it works” page, and you can create a request here.

Under a very close-fitting dress, shapewear sometimes works better, and you can add a matching lingerie set to the slip.

Questions and answers

Which slip should I choose for a dress?

One slightly shorter than the dress hem, in a fabric that does not build up static. For a close-fitting dress, smooth styles without lace work best.

Silk or satin?

Silk is natural and breathable but costs more and needs careful care. Satin is cheaper and more practical every day.

How do I state the length?

Write, for example, “knee-length”, or give the length in centimetres from shoulder to hem. That makes offers more accurate.

What can I do about static?

Choose fabrics blended with cotton or silk, or ask about an anti-static finish. A fabric conditioner made for the purpose also helps.
