Suspension and brake repair: shocks, pads, wheel alignment
What is knocking: a quick guide
The running gear means the suspension, wheel bearings, tie rods and brakes. The symptoms help narrow it down. A knock over small bumps is often from the stabiliser links or bushes. A dull thud on a pothole is from the shock absorbers or mounts. A hum that grows with speed and changes in turns is most often a wheel bearing. A squeal and vibration when braking mean pads or discs.
Do not joke with brakes: if the pedal sinks, the car pulls to one side or a warning light is on, it is better not to drive further.
What to put in your request
- what to do — bushes, ball joints, shock absorbers, wheel bearing, pads, discs, wheel alignment;
- make, model, year and engine — for example Hyundai Verna, 2017;
- axle and side — front or rear, left or right;
- symptoms — a knock at the front right, a squeal, a hum, vibration in the steering wheel;
- spare parts — yours or the mechanic's, a brand such as Lemförder or Sachs;
- wheel alignment — whether it is needed after the work;
- city, timing and budget.
Example: “Hyundai Verna, 2017. A knock at the front right over bumps. I need a check of the running gear and replacement of the bushes and stabiliser links, parts are mine. Then wheel alignment. Durban, tomorrow, budget up to R 820.”
How to compare offers
In this category it is easy to get a low price for “diagnosis” and then see several items added during the work. So ask about the diagnosis separately: whether it is free with a repair, and whether the car is inspected on a lift with all parts. See whether parts are replaced in pairs: shock absorbers, pads and discs are usually changed together on one axle.
On BlaBlaPrice you describe the car and symptoms once, and mechanics reply in the chat: what they propose, the price or what it depends on, timing, warranty. The site shows the best offer by substance first, with reviews of the mechanic next to it. Mechanics see their place among the others, so they adjust their terms. Contacts are opened only to the one you choose.
What affects the price
- the class of parts: original, good aftermarket or a budget option;
- the axle and the suspension design: multi-link is more expensive to work on than a MacPherson strut;
- rusted threads that have to be broken or cut off;
- wheel alignment after the work and the need to replace related parts.
Common mistakes
Replacing one element when the rest are already worn, and coming back a month later. Saving on pads and discs. Ignoring the brake fluid: it is changed on schedule, because it absorbs moisture. Forgetting wheel alignment: the tyres wear unevenly.
If the knock may come from the steering, look at steering rack repair. And for a regular check during servicing there is servicing and oil change. Everything is in the section “Car & motorcycle servicing”.
