Washing machine: how to choose by size, load and motor
Measure the space first
Washing machines are chosen by the space first and then by features. Measure the width, height and depth of the spot, and allow room behind for the hoses and for the door to open. A standard front-loader is about 50–60 cm deep, slim models are shallower, and top-loaders are narrow but open from above, so they need free space overhead.
How many kilos and which type
Choose the load by the size of your household: for a couple 5–6 kg is usually enough, and for a family with children 7–8 kg or more is more comfortable. Types: front-loader is the most common, top-loader suits tight bathrooms, built-in goes under kitchen units, and a washer-dryer is for when there is no room for a separate dryer.
What to put in your request
- load and type;
- size of the space — depth, width, height;
- new or used;
- model or brand, if you have already picked one;
- features — inverter motor, steam, spin speed, energy rating, Wi-Fi;
- delivery — floor, lift;
- connection — water, drain, socket;
- city and budget.
Example: “I need a new slim front-loading washing machine, 7 kg, depth up to 45 cm, inverter motor, 1200 rpm spin. Pretoria, delivery to the 5th floor with no lift, plus installation. Budget up to R 5,900.”
What separates a cheap one from an expensive one
An inverter motor is quieter and lasts longer than a brushed one, but such machines cost more. Steam helps with allergens and smooths fabric, but isn't essential for most washes. A spin speed above 1200 rpm isn't needed by everyone, as it is harder on the fabric. Look at the leak protection and at the number of programmes you will actually use.
How to compare offers
Compare the load, the depth and the motor, not just the brand. Find out whether delivery, carrying it up the stairs and installation are included in the price or paid separately. For a used machine, ask about its age, the condition of the drum and the pump, and the seller's warranty.
The same mistakes keep happening: people forget the hoses and the door swing, forget about a floor with no lift, or don't agree who takes away the old machine. That last service is sometimes paid, so ask about it straight away. It is also worth asking whether you can check the machine for dents or damage when it is delivered.
How it works with BlaBlaPrice
You write your request on BlaBlaPrice once, and sellers reply in chat with the model, price, and delivery and installation terms. They can see where their offer stands and compete for your request. The best-value offer is shown first, with reviews next to it. Contacts stay hidden and are opened only to the seller you choose. More in How it works.
As a pair you can consider tumble dryers, and for older appliances you may need spare parts for home appliances.
