How to Buy a Desktop Computer: for Work, Study or Gaming
Ready-made PC, custom build or all-in-one
Desktop computers come in three main formats. A tower is the most flexible: it is easy to upgrade. A mini PC takes little space and suits an office. An all-in-one joins the screen and the computer, so you need less desk, but repair and upgrades are harder. There are also the Mac mini and iMac for those who work in the Apple ecosystem. Think about how much space you have, whether you plan to upgrade later, and whether you need a separate monitor.
What really affects speed
For office work and study, an SSD and at least 16 GB of memory change the feel of speed the most, while the processor can be mid-range. For games the graphics card decides: for 2K gaming, for example, put most of the budget into it. For video editing and 3D, a multi-core processor and plenty of RAM matter, and for programming a fast SSD and 32 GB of RAM if you work with containers.
Used and refurbished computers
Refurbished office PCs can be a great option for modest money. Ask about the age and condition of the drive, whether the thermal paste was replaced, about the power supply, and whether the system was updated. For used gaming PCs, ask about the graphics card's history. The Windows licence matters too: find out whether it's in the price.
What to put in your request
- what for: office, study, games at a certain resolution, design, editing, programming;
- processor: model or generation, for example Ryzen 5 7600;
- new or used;
- graphics card: model or integrated;
- RAM: size and type, for example 32 GB DDR5;
- storage: SSD or HDD, size;
- case type: tower, mini PC, all-in-one;
- what's included: monitor, keyboard, mouse, Windows;
- warranty and budget.
Example: “I need a new desktop PC for 2K gaming: Ryzen 5 7600, RTX 4060, 32 GB DDR5, 1 TB SSD, without a monitor, with a warranty of 12 months or more. Ajman, budget up to AED 3,500.”
How to compare offers
Compare parts one by one, because the same price can hide a weaker power supply or a cheap SSD. Ask for the make of the power supply and motherboard, free slots for upgrades, and cooling. The warranty on a ready build should cover all parts, so ask who provides it. The cost of assembly and setup is also worth comparing.
