Excavator or bulldozer hire: which machine suits your job

Pick the machine for the job, not the other way round

A foundation pit, a cable trench, a pond, clearing a plot and demolition all need different machines. A backhoe loader (a JCB, as most people call it) is the all-rounder for small sites: it digs, loads and levels. A mini excavator fits through narrow passages and does not wreck a lawn. A crawler excavator is for large volumes, and a bulldozer is for levelling an area and building up embankments. A hydraulic breaker helps on concrete and hard ground.

It is important to know the volume: a pit of 120 m³ or a trench 2 m deep changes the machine, the number of shifts and the number of tipper trucks you need.

What affects the price most

  • Type and size of the machine: heavier equipment costs more per hour.
  • Soil: clay, rocks or groundwater slow the work down.
  • Minimum shift: often 4–8 hours, even if the job is smaller.
  • Delivery of the machine: a low-loader to the site is usually charged separately.
  • Taking the soil away: tippers add to the cost, but they clear the plot.

What to put in your request

  • Type of machine — JCB, mini excavator, bulldozer, breaker.
  • The work — pit, trench, levelling.
  • Volume — m³, length and depth of the trench.
  • Soil — clay, sand, whether there is water.
  • Duration and date — 8 hours, next Tuesday.
  • Site address.
  • Access — narrow gate, wires, soft ground.
  • Soil removal — needed or not.
  • Budget, if you want to name one.

Example: “I need a JCB backhoe loader in Dubai, to dig a foundation pit: about 120 m³, 2 m deep, clay soil with some water. The soil must be taken away by tippers. Next Tuesday, for 8 hours. Budget up to AED 55 per hour.”

How to get offers on BlaBlaPrice

You describe the work in one request, and equipment owners in your area reply in the chat: which machine, the hourly price (or what it depends on), delivery, the minimum shift. The platform shows the best-fitting offer first, and you can see reviews of the provider next to it. Each owner sees their place among the others, so they compete on terms. Your contacts stay hidden until you choose a provider.

Compare like with like: with or without an operator, whether fuel, delivery and soil removal are in the price, and how waiting time is counted. Agree on a rough schedule and on who is responsible for damage to utilities on the plot, and find out in advance where the cables and pipes run. Before digging a trench near a house, it helps to mark the line, or the operator will not know where to stop. If the soil stays on the plot, agree where to pile it so that it does not get in the way of later work.

If you need to take soil away or bring in aggregate, see a tipper truck, and for a small plot see a mini tractor. More is on the “How it works” page.

Questions and answers

What machine suits a foundation pit?

For a small house a backhoe loader or mini excavator is often enough, and for a large volume a crawler machine is used. Describe the volume and the soil, and owners will suggest an option.

Is delivery of the machine included in the price?

Not always. Delivery is often charged separately, especially if a low-loader is needed. Check it in each offer.

How is waiting time paid?

Terms differ: some charge a full hour, others have a limit. Ask about it before the work starts.

Does the customer pay for BlaBlaPrice?

No, it is free for the customer. The provider pays only when you choose them.
